Beach Boys
>critically acclaimed as one of the most influential and greatest bands of all time
>the public only knows them as the funny surf guys
Is there a bigger disconnect not only in music but for any artform or media? It's insane to me that I can mention The Beach Boys to people and get scoffed at. It's not even a "whose that?" reaction, literally everyone in the world knows them.

I remember when I first came to /mu/ I thought pet sounds was a board meme for a solid month or two for the same reason. the goofy cover art doesn't help

according to...? the reality is none of that is true. a handful of boomers say they are good so their grandchildren decades later think its true. lol the beach boys sound like baby music to me. yeah look at these broken down bums trying to get popular again teaming with the fat boys and appearing on full house with uncle jesse on drums. lol pathetic...

brian wilson was a talent so immense that it spawned a surrounding industry. bound to be some associated garbage you can point to. doesn't change the fact that he's the greatest composer of popular music ever to have lived. you shouldn't be so proud of announcing your lack of discernment

Reminder the Mike Love made The Beach Boys. He was the lead singer on pretty much every one of their biggest hits and without him they never would've amounted to anything.

Imagination [Giant, 1998]
Brian Wilson's genius was never as indelible as worshippers believe. Cambered by Van Dyke Parks or stripped by Don Was, he was magical, crafting visions of eternal sunshine or crackpot solipsism or both. Yoked to adult contemporary tyro Joe Thomas, however, he's just one more pro who's proud he's no longer crazy and knows even less about the world than when he was. C

>Brian's original lyrics in the first verse had the line "Well there's a million little girls just waitin' around / But there's only so much to do in a little town / I get around from town to town". Love told Wilson that these were "pussy lyrics" and subsequently revised them.

So it's entirely clear if he actually was celibate for 10 year but:
“I’ve got my secret here. I don’t tell anybody my secret,” confides Brian, still sitting by his piano. “I have a secret… I’ll tell you anyway: I don’t have any sex, OK? The secret is abstaining from orgasm. An Einsteinian formula that if you abstain from having an orgasm for, say, 10 years, you create a void in your brain. In other words, if you don’t express and orgasm for 10 years, it’s a long time, right? Most people think two weeks without an orgasm’s a long time.

“And I did that, y’know? My dad told me in high school: ‘Son, now you’re gonna be going through a lot of hell as you grow up, and the one thing you should never do is you should not have orgasms and masturbate and you should not fuck with girls.’ And I tried it out. I’d been jacking off all summer, y’know? And toward the end of the summer, I’m going into my junior year in high school and my dad lays that on me. I go there and I try it out and I say: ‘What the fuck is this shit? Hey, wait a minute, man, I like not coming better than coming!’ And I kept going that way for a long, long time and finally I came to the conclusion that I’m gonna tell people my secret. But I just don’t want some chick to go: ‘Oh, that’s your secret? Well here, I’ll make you come’… Ain’t that a weird trip?”

Their early stuff is good, too. I first checked out pet sounds because it's so legendary, and wasn't a big fan of smiley smile or wild honey, although I really liked sunflower.
I gave them a rest after that and eventually discovered Today! which inspired me to check out all their earlier stuff. The first two albums have lot of filler, but after that they have a lot of great songs.
People just became too bitter and cynical. What's wrong with songs about youth, fun, summer, cars, etc? I think there's an innocence in it all. It's like a time capsule to the 50s and 60s idyllic teenage life

Smiley Smile is great if view as the first lo-fi indie album and you take out Heroes and Villains and Good Vibrations. Love how creepy the whole album kind of feels

not really. most beatles "fans" can only name like 4 songs and john mayer is known as a pop artist. sometimes you have to churn out the sloppa to get the connections and money to make the art you truly want.
Why did Mike Love get a pet?
Why didn't Mike Love get a pet?
>>127184217
if it sounds like pop that's part of the genius. there's 100 complex things song on in the song but it has the staying power of a 1654 sloppa
