I really like this one, but it's hard to find similar albums. The only other one I have found that scratches this itch is Angel Witch's eponymous album. Basically, epic scope, heavy 80s guitar tone and this punkish beat when the songs get faster. Any ideas?
Other Manilla albums are fine but are a bit convoluted, I prefer the simple approach of this one. Doom bands, like Cirith Ungol are also fine but I really like when some songs explode and get faster so I prefer to stick to that. Jag Panzer also good but I feel they aren't nerdy enough.

I think it's okay. Highly overrated. What I'm about to say is going to sound extremely patronizing, but I think people who praise this album to high heavens haven't listened to that much metal. Sonically there's nothing on this album that I haven't heard explored more deeply on other metal albums. It was just kinda forgettable, but the execution was decent enough, so there was nothing outright offensive about it. It's better than their previous foray into metal, Infest the Rats' Nest, which I found very unsatisfactory.

Tool shows seem to be the worst, because Tool fans are mostly drugged-up betas looking to prove how "tough" they are by mimicking Television Tough, which isn't the same as IRL as they painfully learn. I can't even be arsed to go see Tool anymore since their show is basically paying $500 to watch a trippy movie while the band hides in the back sounding exactly like their records, but I recommend it at least once, if for no other reason than watching what happens when a crowd of druggies actually brave the outside world and gather in a large group.
