Back when I started listening to Children of Bodom I would just skip straight to the riffs, melodies, and solos and eschew all the vocal parts. Grew to tolerate it a bit over the years but it's still less than ideal.

Angel of Death sounded hilarious to me the first time I heard it until I revisited it and found myself enjoying the riffs more and more, repeating it until eventually everything else fell into place helping me make sense of it, which made me want even more after that.

I'm not a big death metal guy but I do like death-doom, and honestly it took me a while to get acclimated to death growls. From my experience bands like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Opeth were good bands to get used to the idea. I think Opeth especially has a good entry level vocalist in Mikael, maybe give Blackwater Park a spin?

The best music has a mix of clean vocals and growls

High-pitched extreme vocals (excluding pig squeals, those are just plain retarded) are infinitely superior to the low-pitched ones. That said, I have no problem with the vocals in most DM subgenres (melodeath, prog death, death doom etc). It's the pure DM dur dur dur growls that suck ass
