They're awesome. Go play one. Don't take my word for it. If anything, they keep getting better. They did a big "remaster" in the 2010s to get more in line with old 30s specs, and they just tweaked them a bit more for 2025. It's all subtle stuff like neck carves and nut angles, but they're just trying to be as period correct on what worked for so long. I think in the 70s, they veered off course and Martin themselves now aren't the proudest of their own stuff then.

One thing to note about the new D-28s. They're all like HD-28s now (same internal bracing). Long story, but the D-28s changed around WW2 and they later reissued the original braced model as the HD-28. It's far more shimmery. For years, the D-28 and HD-28 were in their lineup as separate models. They grew to have their own fanbases. But now they're consolidated on the basic design again.
Not too much has changed about the D-18s. They didn't need much confusion cleared up. The new ones have abalone inlays and look awesome, but it doesn't affect playability or anything.

I shouldn't even say it's that much different. It's subtle. Just that the classic bracing accentuated a little more highs and lows. Probably louder too. Now they're the same, soundwise. They've kept the HD-28 name around, but now it's just the fancier appointments. "H" in HD-28 stood for the Herringbone design around the binding and just a fancier look in general. The D-28 look is no frills like a D-18, but sounds the same as the HD-28 now.

Yeah. D-18s are more in your face. Also, if you want a personal suggestion, I'd tell you D-18 myself. Or if you wanted a shorter scale, the Gibson J-45. They're both no frills workhorses. Other guitars may sound prettier, but sometimes just having a basic sound is all you need. If you have money to spare, you can get a D-28 later.

guess it depends on what you're playing and who you're playing with. i learned my major scale shape and my intervals so whenever someone talks about modes or scales i just make alterations to the major scale instead of learning whole new shapes. i would definitely learn intervals because they're the best way to break down melodies and progression but at least learn the notes on the top two strings for moving chords around

I would highly recommend an Indio 66SB DLX.
Thy're almost as good as a Gibson LP.
If there's any downside, it's that they're quite fragile.
I dropped mine once, and not only is there a serious chip in my headstock, the pick up toggle switch broke in half.
Not to worry, though.
The guitar stayed in tune, and the toggle switch still works fine.
Also the electronics work fine, and weren't affected in any way.
They usually go for about $250.00 (U.S.)

You know, I've never had any issues with most of the Gibsons or Epiphones I've owned, especially with the headstock, although, to be honest, I did own an Epiphone SG Special model with P90s that a serious neck dive issue.

Well, I don't have seventeen reasons.
All I can honestly tell you is I like the way it sounds, I like the way it plays, it feels comfortable to play, it's fun to play, it's a total bitch magnet, and I've always wanted one of these, and I saved up enough money to get one.
A bit pricey, but I'm happy with it.
If there's any downsides it's I don't use whammy bars, (That's for surf bands, and people who want to play Smoke On The Water) and it's a satin finish, and not a gloss finish, but I can overlook these two minor issues.

With the model I posted here, I keep everything u to 10, bt on the other model I have with three volumes, and one tone, I have to turn down one of the volumes to get the sound I'm looking for.
I mostly use the bridge pick up, but sometimes, when I'm looking for a certain sound, I switch to the middle position, or just play the neck pick up, but I'm mostly a rhythm player, not a lead player.
It still does what i want it to so, though.
