Based. You could argue music's peaks were greater before, but finding and listening to music might be the best its ever been, if you have ways to filter the mediocrity. Let pop music and their charts cannibalize themselves.

How the fuck was Bon Jovi that popular both with a band AND solo? He's made some of the worst music I've ever had the misfortune of hearing. Were boomers that tasteless?

Spot on. Discovering music you’d like has never been easier; nowadays you don’t need to spend any money to open your ears to new sounds.

the 90s was the biggest cultural wasteland up to that point in human history

it was NOTHING like what the internet (especially /mu/) thinks it was

To be honest 1990-91 were still really the late 80s with the "real" 90s beginning in 92.

There's a lot of things that were better in the past so I'm not pretending like everything is awesome now. But there's literally zero argument with music. You can listen to all of it now. It even gives you more cool cred

I can't even listen to the first 3 songs in that chart without collapsing into total ugly crying after I lost my mom, she liked to play these all the time back then.

If you didn't live it and actually hear the wide variety of music on the radio, then you'll never understand. Charts don't look so good, but there were weird hits and unexpected sounds in the mainstream. Never happens post-90s.

The thing about the 80s is that when you get past the cheesy ballads the rest of the music was not all that bad. And most other media was fucking amazing.

Animation had not entirely gotten out of the Hanna-Barbara/Disney dark ages slop era.

I'd say 2002 had the most "tf did that happen" Billboard but mostly just because of 9/11 aftermath.

Those 90s "corporate pop" shit on everything that has been produced in music in the last 15 years. Unfortunately.

I could talk about almost each of them.
Wilson Philips were very mid, but most of the others were fucking great compared to anything in pop today.

Just VIsion of Love is better than Taylor Swift's or Rodrigo's entire careers.

Even a techno/dance song like Pump up the jam had soul, just listen to the vocals. I don't know anyone in music who can sing like that today.

The 80s had a really sleazy street-level edge underneath all the slick pop music. It was dangerous. The 90s was just… nothing. Slacker decade.

the 90s had a booming economy and major expansion of the middle class, things felt way softer and more suburban. that was inevitable. now of course sleaze aesthetics returned in post-9/11 era but at the price of being 10x stupider and trashier than anything in the 80s.
