If they aren't heavy metal, what separates them from heavy metal?
In general, is there a difference between nu-metal riffs and heavy metal riffs?
Is there a reason stuff like funeral doom is typically considered metal when nu-metal sometimes isnt?

Nu metal is s sub genre of heavy metal. The sound is often defined by low end riffs with chunky distorted power chords and an emphasis on piercing muted notes especially in numetal. There's common elements on drums and vocals too

Slipknot is Nu Metal which is actually funk rock + grunge + sludge metal and sometimes + rap. so its like 1 quarter metal.

1st 2 albums are a bunch of babies who know nothing about music slamming pots and pans together thinking it's music with pretty terrible mixing.
Vol. 3 is when Rick Ruben rounded them up and was like "okay I like the energy guys, but let's actually make some music out of it instead of clangy shit noise"
So yes vol 3 is metal, with tinges of Horrocore and Nu-Metal. It may not be as "HEAVY" as their first two records technically, but because the punch and impact is better overall I'd like to think it IS heavier. Especially over the first album since the first album the drums sound like slapping paper bags. People just complain because of the few acoustic parts to the record which imo gives the record a nice rounded out dynamic. Too bad it all fell apart pretty much right after Vol 3. and they went full alternative metal shit.
