There's no doubt the Zeppelin guys could really play, even Page, as sloppy as he could be live, and their aura is legendary. However, so much of their music is just undercooked and repetitive blues tunes, just a little bit heavier. I kinda agree with Keith Richards on this one: they are aptly named as they never took off musically. On that note, it's pretty telling how much they were disliked by their contemporaries, like The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Hendrix. As someone who has never gotten what was so uniquely great about them, at least I am in good company.

Plagiarism aside, blues music is just boring to my ears, and cranking up the distortion doesn't really make it any less dull. They definitely have some good tunes in their catalogue, but I just never understood the hype. Give me King Crimson over them any day. Zep is mid.

I've heard a fair bit, even played some of it on guitar. Yes, it's not all blues, there's a lot of folk in there as well, but take The Battle Of Evermore as an example. The intro has this motif on mandolin that's a descending chromatic scale. It sounds sinister, sure, but how many Zep songs use the motif of a slowly ascending or descending chromatic scale as the hook. Top of my head:
>Stairway To Heaven
>Dazed And Confused
>Kashmir
Black Dog's riff also hinges on a lot of chromaticism. It all becomes so samey so quickly. I just don't find them to be a very creative group. Another good one is Fool In The Rain. Killer groove, it sounds great at first, but after two minutes, it hasn't changed or developed in the slightest bit, they're still playing the same riff over and over, and we still have four minutes to go. When The Levee Breaks has the same problem. Cool groove at first, plays it for seven minutes with no development. Like Richards said, it never takes off.

>zep made at least as many hard rock
Most of their well-known hard rock tunes, like Black Dog, are basically just blues songs with the distortion cranked up. Page would not even deny this, he clearly loves the blues. I frankly don't, which is why I prefer something like King Crimson, which is not bluesy in the slightest.

I never ripped on their tecnical prowess as musicians. I even explicitly gave them cred for being good players.

>Are you always this uptight and nitpicky?
Yes, considering how much Zep is idolized, to the point of being easily the most widely beloved rock act out of the 70s (maybe except for Queen), I have good reason to hold them to the highest possible standard.

>Why cant you just enjoy the music for what it is?
Believe me, I have tried. I really have.

Yes and no. I don't need to try hard to like KC, it comes naturally. With Zep, I have really tried, I have tried so hard, but I just think it's sooooo boring. And not to turn this into a blog, I have made a lot of friends in my life, but I have always been different and never quite fit in, so you're half-right on that one. I have long since accepted that normies love Zep and I don't.

They're often too bluesy as well for me, it's just that people generally don't worship them to an unhealthy degree as much as Zep. And like I said, King Crimson is the 70s band that strikes the perfect balance for me. 21st Century Schizoid Man has tons of chromaticism, more so than any of the previously mentioned Zep tunes, but it's much more varied and dynamic. The music is actually going somewhere.

I don't get the point of this. You don't like the band because you just don't enjoy them stylistically/aesthetically but you acknowledge they're good musicians? Great, don't listen to them, that's it.. I've spent a ton of time listening to both Zepellin and King Crimson and like both bands, Zepellin a little more. If you're at party you can play a ton of Zep songs, but if you play Larks Tongues in Aspic (great album) or even most of their discography you will fuck up the party (to be fair KC a couple accessible songs, mostly from the 80s). Zeppelin are not just a blues band, for their time they were a step above most typical blues rock. Black Sabbath are bluesy and virtually all metalheads love them.

Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin had six classic five star albums in a row out of their eight studio albums. Their output only started to dip in the mid-to-late '70s when Page got into heroin. Almost no one can rival that streak, so Page is one of the all time great songwriters.

It still has a little bit of that aforementioned predictable descending chromatic line, but it's not too much of a crutch here, since it's not the centerpiece.
