>boomers and gen x fanboys over him
>considered a musical genius
>listen to his vast and expansive discography
>only 3-5 are listenable, the rest is shit
Why was it ever up for debate that he was ever on MJ's level? MJ had more consistent material compared to Prince's quantity over quality method of releasing music, MJ had a better ear for hit and he was more selective.

Once grunge and gangsta rap took over, Prince quickly became irrelevant as a musician and was seen more as an eccentric celebrity. Everybody knew The Artist Formally Known as Prince, but no one who wasn't already a fan in the 80s cared or liked his music. His sound is dated. Being able to play instruments doesn't matter when your music sucks.

There's a bit where he moves his guitar up in increments and girls swoon.

I had a flatmate who adored Prince, he had a 0.5" penis but masturbated 10x a day. I ate TWO doner kebabs while watching Purple Rain and thought it was boring.

Prince released a lot of duds after he peaked, but no, MJ was absolutely not a better songwriter or musician than Prince. If MJ had lived until 2016 after making his planned comeback his discography would be filled with way more dogshit, which it already was. From 1979 to '87 Prince released an album almost every year, each of which was really good or great. MJ's artistic peak was at the same time, in which he made three.

MJ has 3 and they're all half filler. Everything from Dangerous and on is DOGSHIT.

Purple rain is pretty overrated. I mean the other albums made before it are a lot better. Its mostly gimmicky with 80s production tricks and racy lyrics. What is impressive about him was he could play everything and produce himself on his own albums and wrote tons of songs. He was generally solid but only a handful are classic

>MJ had more consistent material
Jacko has exactly one (1) truly great album. The rest of his output doesn't come close to how good Prince was in the 80s.
Their music isn't similar anyway, they just happened to both be fruity light skin twinks in the same decade.

Dirty Mind (1980)
1999 (1982)
Purple Rain (1984)
Parade (1986)
Sign o' the Times (1987)

These are all much better than anything MJ released.

Prince didn't have sex with little boys, so he wins just because of that.

In terms of talent, the only thing MJ had over Prince was vocals and dancing. Prince produced, composed, wrote and played most of the instruments on most of his albums all white being one of the greatest guitarists of all time. MJ was an elite entertainer Prince was an elite musician.

Prince's best material is his later stuff which flew under the radar like The Black Album, Emancipation, Crystal Ball. Even Prince called Purple Rain just a pop album. The follow-up Around the World in a Day is a much superior and more sonically interesting album that Purple Rain imo.

Nor was MJ nearly as instrumentally proficient as Prince.

"In his debut album, For You, Prince showcased an astounding proficiency by playing an impressive repertoire of 27 instruments. This serves as a testament to his unparalleled musical talent and versatility, spanning a diverse array of instrument types and classes.
What instruments did Prince play?"

During the recording process of For You, Prince played all 27 instruments and delivered every vocal line himself. Per CalypsoRoom, he specifically handled:
