This isn't true.
He liked to give off that image but he was 100% trying to be a big star, he said it himself in his journals. He was extremely driven with the band too. In the early days with Nirvana they went through various members because Kurt insisted they practice every single day (pretty unheard of for any band at that age). At one point Krist was about to quit because Kurt wanted everything to be his way all the time and was talked out of it by Mark Lanegan.

Also you can tell by how he wrote songs after Bleach that he wanted to be poppier. Nirvana were never going to become a big band playing that harsh type of music on that album (except for about a girl)

Kurt probably was conflicted about being that famous and the fact that it's a huge amount of pressure is true though as you say. I don't think anything could prepare someone for being that famous so fast.

Secondly I think his mind was made up long before he got to stardom. There's a schoolmate story about Kurt telling him that he wants to become as legendary as Jimi Hendrix then die at the height of success.

He really had no plans to grow old. There are some entries in his diary where he semi-ironically looks concerned about the future, about whether he will have to deal with balding and get hair implants, etc.

I've always despised his music anyway. Usually, I can tolerate even the worst music, but Nirvana is one of the only bands that I feel the need to turn off or get away from when I hear it. It blows my mind how many people think that he made good music. It's fucking awful. It's anti-melodic. It's repetitive in a way that isn't satisfying.
