i'm a fan but a problem for anyone who's never listened to them before but likes the warp 'idm' and adjacent is that if you approach them by listening to practically anything they've recorded after 2000 you'll be varying levels of confused

I am surprised almost no musicians seem to even try to make music like this. I suspect in about 20 years some people will figure out how to make AI make better-than-human music and autechre will be one of the only reference points

I just like the way they sound, even their weird shit, there's nothing quite like it. I'm sure there's some impressive technical aspects of their music that goes over my head. They're definitely not for everyone; I was listening to Confield at a friend's place one time and his gf said it was too scary and made us turn it off hahaha

This is about modern Autechre I guess. The appeal is that you are into abstract electronic music and sound design, and more specifically a research into the unknown. If you're a normie pleb who only perceives music through the means of traditional instrumentation and notation, there is no room for you.

Apparently they use (or have used) Max/MSP which is for generative music, you can find a lot of tracks made with it on youtube. There's also PureData which is similar.

>>127336197
I was in the same place as you, but the other albums have been growing on me, I think they're good for repeated listens (though there are still some tracks that filter me). Still, Incunabula is something special even though it's the most conventional album they did.

it doesn't work in the modern world. if you were around in the 90s then it made sense. once people had DAWs on their laptop and a smartphone, IDM was pointless.
i watched it die. autechre is music for guys approaching 50 who still want to think they are cool in their minds. a form of snobbery and luddism, ironically, given how future focussed it once was.
Anonymous No.127342681 >>127342996

max/msp allows you to do what you want. to create your own creation tools. generative stuff just gets views because it offers hope to the talentless that they can press a dice icon and get a great "preset' and some never ending sound they can cut loops from to turn into a track.

> do you like actual electronic music being performed?
Then, Autechre are for you.

Their approach to music is similar to jazz musicians.
This is especially true if you listen to their concerts. I loved how they blended all the electronic styles to make a concert that was danceable but still unpredictable.
The early stuff is still remarkable and fresh to this day, no wonder that in some dj sets you’ll still dance to Kalpol Intro (live).

Definitely a concert that I’d see again and never get tired of.

basically: not really.
their album tracks might have improvised/random elements, but they do a ton of work setting up their Max/MSP to sound/behave a certain way.
their live sets are them improvising/communicating with each other in realtime on their rig.
