I ever so slightly prefer “Bare Trees” but “Mystery to Me” is more Welch-dominated. Bare Trees was Danny Kirwan’s last album with Fleetwood Mac and he was a great talent in his own right.

For me, it's Bare Trees. It has some of Bob's best tunes (The Ghost, Sentimental Lady) and Danny's too (Sunny Side of Heaven, Bare Trees, Dust), not to mention one of Chris' best songs (Spare Me a Little of Your Love). Mystery to Me was Bob's defining moment, and it's wonderful, but I feel like FM lost some of their magic when they lost Danny.

This performance has so many gems. Bob's tasty solo at the end of Hypnotized, Bob Weston almost crossing paths with Mick Fleetwood onstage nine years after fucking his wife and almost destroying Fleetwood Mac, Mick ogling Stevie during Gold Dust Woman, that coked-out blues jam with Ann Wilson and Carmine Appice. Great stuff.

have to agree. i like that Mystery to Me is brighter and poppier but Bare Trees is just top writing all round.

Ranking the Bob Welch-Fleetwood Mac albums:

1. Mystery To Me - this is right up there with the best of the Buckingham/Nicks ‘Mac imo. Most of the best songs are Welch tunes but the album’s closer by Christine McVie, “Why”, is an underrated gem.

2. Bare Trees - it’s a damn shame Kirwan went nuts or whatever because he, Welch and Christine McVie firing on all cylinders like they were here is just an embarrassment of riches.

3. Future Games - a few unmemorable but by no means bad songs drag this down ever so slightly, but it quite possibly features Welch and Kirwan’s magnum opuses: the title song and Sands of Time, respectively.

4. Penguin- some of Welch and McVie’s best tunes here, but it’s dragged down by two generic Dave Walker blues numbers. They were also still struggling to find their footing after Kirwan’s exit. Still love the album though.

5. Heroes are Hard to Find - I must say the Welch-era went out with a whimper. Not really Bob’s fault though, it’s ranked so low because he’s the only one contributing any decent songs here.

I’d say albums 1-3 stand up very strongly in comparison with the first (and, imo, best) three ‘Mac albums with Buckingham/Nicks. Might still prefer Buckingham/Nicks at their peak but it’s damn closer than most give credit for.

good and fairly objective ranking. Heroes Are Hard to Find is actually underrated. i think it has some of Christine's best work. (not the title track though, that's terrible)
>Come a Little Bit Closer
>Bad Loser
>Prove Your Love
all excellent.

as for the Bob songs, everyone digs Coming Home, Angel and Bermuda Triangle but I actually like all his tracks on side 2 as well, even Born Enchanter. Safe Harbour is also a really nice exit note.

no way would i put Heroes under Penguin

Sentimental Lady is baby-making music in both the ‘Mac version and the solo version.

It’s actually not from a photo shoot. The woman on the left was Mick Fleetwood’s wife (and Patti Boyd’s sister). The woman on the right was Bob Welch’s hot wife (who was happy to have threesomes and to let the Welchster spread his wild oats). Bob Welch was so fucking based.
