Well I think it's evident, it was MORE controversial to say you're "bigger than Jesus," than it was to say "if you're black in the US you're treated like shit." Your average American person was either racist or accepted racism as part of life, so they didn't give a fuck if some Brits were looking down their noses at US race politics. Most people wouldn't blink twice at the word nigger back then.
