it doesn't matter what my musical preferences are

in short, i contend that Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal" (https://youtu.be/CDl9ZMfj6aE?si=lCjnHMv_nNAXYRTZ), and Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" (https://youtu.be/-N4jf6rtyuw?si=AEhnED0_5IZGGk5H) were the most /deservedly/ infectious songs of the 90s and 00s, respectively.

i have my own reservations in this conclusion. it wouldn't be hard for anyone to name ten or more truly valid candidates. as long as we're talking mass appeal songs

pardon my indulgence. i don't apologize for any of the following. not specifically controlling for personal bias, some of the others that i was a dick twitch away from nominating:

1990s

I went to high school with them. Everyone used to say that back then. Fun fact: they used the money the label gave them for a music video for a day trip instead and filmed it and used the footage for the video.

>that one guy who everyone considered the textbook basic bitch back in the day

So this is what your kind of people are up to these days, OP? Being an obnoxious normie truly led you to GREAT THINGS, like writing Livejournal-tier posts on /mu/. DO you still frost the tips of whatever hair you have left on your head as well?

96-98 had a lot of good mostly one hit wonder songs that I guess would fit into the singer-songwriter/soft rock or adult contemporary genre. Barely Breathing, Sunny Came Home, Bitch, Save Tonight. Outside of that sub-genre, Iโ€™d add How Bizarre, Closing Time, and Sugar Rayโ€™s Fly to the list of very catchy songs from that era. That post-grunge but pre nu-metal, boy band/teen pop starlet, hip hop dominance era was underrated imo. To some extent I guess thatโ€™s nostalgia talking though. 10 years ago I read an article from vice or someplace like that and they basically postulated that the era Iโ€™m describing was the worst in pop history.
