Microkorg is a very entry level one because it makes sound design very simple and easy and it also has a lot of fun sounds. It’s also not too pricey.

I never bought one in the end, just went with software, but the weeks of sperg-powered researching I spent looking for a beginner's hardware synth led me to the same thing. The earlier version seemed preferable, from what I remember.

Fuck no it wasn't, I'm a retard. It was actually the Korg Minilogue, the first edition of that everyone was touting as best beginner synth.

I just got really interested in the Wavestate. Dunno why, it has a lot of ethereal sounds. Could (You) get a lot of mileage from one

If you can't write a tune, I don't recommend any of them. they'll just be glorified toys you'll get bored with within months.

That's great for you, but I'm just giving a heads up in case anybody thinks that these boxes magically shit out great sounds and great music without any musical knowledge required. It was fun for a while for me, satiated my curiosity, but I wouldn't do it again. YMMV.

I can only speak on what I own, but luckily that's a deace amount. Here's the list:

Elektron Digitone
Elektron Model Cycles
Roland MC 101
Korg Electribe 2
Sonicware Liven XFM

Of these if i had to pic one id probably pic the MC101 cause i like it's sounds and form factor. Im using it right now with the Digitone and the TB 3 MO to make those acid tracks i posted. If you want to hear more groovebox tracks i can link a bandcamp page. If you have any questions about any of these machines lemme know. The Electribe is mad fun to fuck with, the digitone sounds like outter space. Idk. The Liven XFM has a built in speaker.

- Used OG OP-1 if you want a portable, versatile toy-like machine that you can use to sketch stuff up on a whim when you're bored.
- OP-1 Field for the same thing except you're rich.
- Moog Grandmother for babby's first semimod.
- Eurorack if you're pretty sure you're never going to want to have money or friends and also like wearing dresses sometimes (zero judgement).
- Digitone if you hate yourself and want to die. Syntakt if you hate yourself but you're not quite sure if you want to die.
- Model:Cycles if you're poor but making the best of it and don't care about limited sound palettes.
- Volca FM for cold, batshit Autechrian soundscapes.
- Roland AIRA S-1 for Boards of Canada worship on a beginner's budget.
- Microfreak if you're just basically starting to learn how to use a synthesizer. Careful though — sounds like shit.

Let’s be real: if you’re still throwing cash at overpriced boutique synths, you’re basically gatekeeping creativity. My Crave delivers raw, inclusive vibes for a fraction of the cost, but I guess some of you are too busy mansplaining “authenticity” to notice. My RD-8’s got more punch than your fragile egos, and I didn’t have to remortgage my soul to afford it. Meanwhile, you’re out here fetishizing $5k Junos like they’re the only way to “feel” music. Newsflash: my Neutron’s filter sweeps are more liberating than your entire setup, and I’m not even trying that hard.I spent last night crafting a patch on my Poly D that could’ve brought tears to your eyes, if anyone was around to hear it. Spoiler: they weren’t. It’s just me, my synths, and my principles, holding space for sounds and solidarity. You’d rather argue about “vintage warmth” than admit Behringer’s democratizing the game. My 2600 clone is out here empowering my creativity while you’re stuck asking, “Is a Volca a real synth?”—like, seriously, grow up and read a bell hooks book or a manual, whichever’s easier for you.I’m not saying I’m better than you (I’m too self-aware for that), but maybe try supporting something as revolutionary as Behringer’s mission instead of clinging to your elitist gear. I’ll be here, tweaking oscillators and unpacking my biases, hoping for a world—or at least a sub—where we all vibe equally. If you need a preset to open your mind, I might share one, but don’t expect me to do the emotional labor of explaining it.

If you have the budget look at a Nord keyboard like the Nord Stage. It's multitimbral, has great keys and a lot of real time and expression controls which make it great for live performing. The synth engine is also pretty powerful and will cover most needs.
If you are on a more limited budget try going for a Novation synth. The synth engine is more limited but still a step above your average retro analog, they've got all the knobs for easy manipulation and their cheapest model (Bass Station) is a tenth of the price of the Nord Stage.

It just depends on what you want to do. Synths are overrated for their versatility, so find one that does a few things very well and then write music to take advantage of those strengths. For software there is the TH2 from Acustica which is free and sounds really excellent, very close to hardware, and for simple basses and leads it's great. I also like the Soundpaint Nuno-60 II for basic Juno style 80s pads. That one is sampled and it just gives you the sound and it sits perfectly in the mix. For hardware it's trickier, but with these 2 VSTs I can do pretty much anything for my type of music (indie pop).

If he gets something more software oriented, like Maschine, or just use the synths that come with Ableton, then he can set it to only play notes (or chords) in a scale and key of his choice.
