I agree 9/11 did wake up cuntree a bit but yes the 80s-90s were amazingly dull decades.

Everybody Knows [MCA, 1996]
Tricia had a dream, and by 1985 she was in Nashville pursuing it--studying "music business," as her bio says, at Belmont College. An internship and some demo singing later, she had signed with MCA, where she now epitomizes the blandness of today's quality country. Not that she's bad or anything. Her voice is big and precise, and she ends up with a good song or two on every album--including this one, where she doesn't ruin strong titles by Kevin Welch and Steve Goodman and brings off a terrific Matraca Berg line about chocolate and magazines. But if songwriters love her so much, it must be because she brings nothing to the song but what they put there. The same cannot be said of Willie Nelson, George Jones, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks--even Shania Twain. In pop music, good taste isn't timeless. It's boring. B

I am fond of Hal Ketchum.
But otherwise I agree this was the worst period for popular country until the 2010s

The late 2000s up to 2016 was quite bad (Florida-Georgia Line sums up that era in a nutshell) however country has been reviving since Trump's first term.

the South in general was kind of thin on musical ideas back then, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Pantera got hyped to the heavens and back for lack of anything else going on, and Hootie and the Blowfish were a one album wonder.

9/11 made it worse. Then came the hip hop influences and the rah rah Murica support the troops bullshit. 90s country is the last decade the music mattered. Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw, George Strait, Martina McBride, etc. it felt like Nashville picked up the fun rock baton that faggot Cobain blew away.

Alan Jackson was good, as was a handful of others.

>90s country was so lame durr hurr
I feel like I’m in opposite land with this thread. Everyone defending the bro country era of Aldean and Eric Church but pissing on the last era of country where the stars genuinely grew up listening to Merle, Waylon and Loretta and had steel guitar twanging on most songs. At least these mother fuckers could sing and looked cool wearing a Stetson. Not these faggot Gen Xers and Millennials wearing Ed Hardy jeans letting posers like Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé take stage at your genres music award show. Get a fuckin clue you guys
