>The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation, it argues that he has no qualities of his own of which he can be proud; otherwise he would not have recourse to those which he shares with so many millions of his fellowmen. The man who is endowed with important personal qualities will be only too ready to see clearly in what respects his own nation falls short, since their failings will be constantly before his eyes. But every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and glad to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.

Julian Gorus has one of the Liszt Annees de pelerinage, but why is the Vallée d'Obermann on it only 4:04 when it's usually at least 10+ minutes longer on every other recording? Bizarre. I guess because the recording still manages to be just under 3 hours so they had to cut something to fit it on 3 CDs, but that seems like such an odd choice -- is there an official shorter version?

Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat major, Op. 106.

Written for the forte piano when Beethoven was 48 and nearly deaf.

Nicknamed "Hammerklavier" noting the instruments,
and nod to prefering german over italitan terms;
one of the most demanding works in the piano repertoire.

There are four movments, each distinct in character
structure and tempo

1. Allegro (B-flat major)
2. Scherzo: Assai vivace (B-flat major)
3. Adagio sostenuto (F-sharp minor)
4. Introduzione: Largo… Allegro – Fuga: Allegro risoluto (B-flat major)

-Was not commissioned by any individual or institution but was a response to advancing piano technology; a way for Beethoven to grapple with profound philosophical and emotional ideas; seen as a reflection of his inner struggles, including his increasing deafness

So, Beethoven was supported by patrons like Archduke Rudolph, to whom the sonata is dedicated; may have been a gesture of gratitude, but the work itself was not written at the request of a patron or for a specific occasion.

1. Allegro (B-flat major)

"bold, heroic" sonata.
unifying rising third motif, which is a
recurring musical idea where a melody rises by a third (e.g., B-flat to D)
Extreme and challenging dynamics.

2. Scherzo: Assai vivace (B-flat major)

A scherzo is a lively, playful musical movement,
often in triple meter, typically replacing the minuet in a symphony or sonata,
with a contrasting trio section.

Assai vivace means "very lively" or "extremely fast" in Italian

in B-flat major with staccato, syncopated theme.
B-flat minor trio adds mystery.
Chaotic presto coda (a fast, concluding section of a musical piece)
showcases Beethoven’s witty, surprising style.

3. Adagio sostenuto (F-sharp minor)

Adagio sostenuto means "slow and sustained" in Italian.

Profoundly expressive Adagio sostenuto in F-sharp minor, with a mournful, hymn-like melody. Explores vast emotional terrain, requiring immense control for its 15–20-minute duration.

4. Introduzione: Largo… Allegro – Fuga: Allegro risoluto (B-flat major)

Largo intro with dissonant, wandering harmonies leads to a monumental,
virtuosic fugue in B-flat major.

Leaping melody, interweaving independent melodic lines.

The fugue is Beethoven’s nod to Bach, but it’s also a radical reinvention of counterpoint, blending classical rigor with romantic expressiveness.

>Violinist Lisa Batiashvili teams up with Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin for an unforgettable version of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major (Op. 35) and Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor (Op. 47), two of the most beloved, passionate and demanding pieces for violin and orchestra. This is Daniel Barenboim's first ever recording of Tchaikovsky's famous and romantic violin concerto.

>Lisa Batiashvili was the ferocious soloist in Tchaikovsky s Violin Concerto, intense in the first movement, luminous and heartfelt in the second, scintillating in the quickfire finale. It was a faultless performance, enthralling and electrifying. --The Guardian

Speaking of Sibelius and Barenboim, it'd be interesting to see him conduct Sibelius' symphonies with his dramatic, Teutonic style. Maazel's probably come the closest? Anyway, this should be good.

>actually know what they're talking about
not really, they just spoke like they did. for instance, he defended John Phillips's recent completion of Bruckner 9 as the most accurate one to Bruckner's wishes (in other words, they fell for a scam because Phillips's claims are total bullshit) so they aren't as smart as they would like you to think.

A reasonable point but you learn to filter it out if you're a regular here.

>not really, they just spoke like they did.
If you can't even admit they had knowledge and expertise in this field, then there's no point to discussing this at all. Even when I disagreed with them, they had a foundational, consistent rationale for their entire belief system.

I've been sucking up information like a sponge from internet forums for, oh, 19 years now? The most important traits I look for above all else is intellect and expertise (with obviously a willingness to occasionally share it). Kindness and generosity and congeniality and chemistry and sociability and all those other great traits are secondary.

First movement of Prague or the Magic Flute overture? Which one do you guys prefer? Mainly asking because I've seen some people crap on the Magic Flute overture on the front of him rehashing the main musical idea from Prague.

Personally, I find the overture to the Magic Flute to be my personal favorite symphonic instrumental movement he ever composed. It's everything I enjoy about him rolled into 6-8 minutes. I love the way Mozart merges aspects of the old form of the French Overture with Sonata-Allegro, I love the outside simplicity conceals the inner intricacy, not to mention it just being overall very expressive and fun, like the rest of the opera is.
