Classic Metal Monday \m/
(Yes, I know it's not actually Monday, but I couldn't make the thread yesterday so this'll have to do!)

Please remember that this is for classic (1970-1990) traditional heavy metal and its sub-genres (speed, power, doom, progressive and thrash) only! Brutal thrash, death, black, and other forms of extreme metal fall outside of the scope of this thread, and if what you want to submit is heavier than Exodus then please go to >>127365096 or any other; more appropriate thread. Thank you!

for the next thread i'm also considering extending the cutoff to 2000 so we can get stoner and a lot more doom metal in here. however that would mean plenty of other genres need to be restricted to keep the spirit of /cmm/ intact. so if i do choose to extend the cutoff, these are the genres that would be 100% okay:

traditional/heavy metal
doom metal
stoner metal
speed metal
progressive metal
power metal
thrash metal

a few genres that depend on the song and or band:

alternative metal
glam metal/hair metal
groove metal (much as i don't like this genre, it's allowed if the cutoff is extended)
sludge metal

and genres that are NOT appropriate for /cmm/ (and i'd much prefer if they were posted somewhere else):

black metal
brutal thrash/death-thrash
death metal
industrial metal
nu metal

does this sound reasonable to everyone? or should some more tweaks be made?

I think the scope of the general should just be based on genre family rather than timeframe. NWoTHM fits much better than groove metal (which it and other "90's" genres I'd consider extensions of alternative or fusion metal)
Progressive metal that isn't also power/heavy metal should be a case by case judgement, if allowed. A lot of it has left heavy metal behind in the same way death metal left thrash.
Death doom, funeral doom, and drone metal shouldn't be included, but I'm sure you had that in mind. Maybe gothic doom too, and probably no gothic metal in general.
What do you think of death 'n' roll/black 'n' roll? Allow none of it, or only if it's heavy metal enough?
Anonymous No.127375277 [Report] >>127375484
>>127375178
>I think the scope of the general should just be based on genre family rather than timeframe
So I initially had the timeframe for one main reason. I really, really don't like how overproduced a lot of modern heavy metal is, and in /metal/ (the main metal thread on /mu/) if traditional metal is discussed that's almost what it is. But, in order to have more of the genres that I want included, the timeframe just isn't really realistic. And I'd much rather put up with modern overproduced metal than lose out on having stoner (one of my favorite sub-genres) in these threads.
>Progressive metal that isn't also power/heavy metal should be a case by case judgement, if allowed. A lot of it has left heavy metal behind in the same way death metal left thrash.
Mmm. Admittedly I don't listen to a lot of prog-metal, so I suppose that this is reasonable. It's probably the sub-genre of trad I have the least experience with. :p
>Death doom, funeral doom, and drone metal shouldn't be included, but I'm sure you had that in mind. Maybe gothic doom too, and probably no gothic metal in general.
Absolutely none of these sub-genres would be allowed.
>What do you think of death 'n' roll/black 'n' roll? Allow none of it, or only if it's heavy metal enough?
None. If it has pronounced elements of death/black, I don't want it here.

So with all that being said... I think what I'm going to do is remove the timeframe, make it so these threads are not limited to one day (there's no point in keeping it limited to Monday if the floodgates are being opened like this), and create a proper FAQ like /metal/. Does this sound alright?

There's an album that was recorded by Jeff Fenholt (worked with Iommi on what would become Seventh Star before reinventing himself as a televangelist) and Craig Goldy (Dio) that was shelved in the mid-90s. A few tracks have leaked out over the years, it's decent Purple/Rainbow kinda shit, hope it gets released sometime.

Why stop at 1990? Lots of good thrash (and other non-extreme) metal can be found in the 1990s and beyond.

read the rest of the thread. also sepultura is pretty clearly the kind of thrash that ISN'T allowed here, it's got death elements and that's where the line is drawn

I found out Janick Gers was in that Gogmagog supergroup with Paul Di’Anno and Clive Burr. Too bad they were only allowed to play knock-off Meatloaf rock opera by the producer.

Bump. I'll try some more Blind Guardian since I've picked the first two back up and enjoyed them a lot. The lack of a speed metal primary genre tag for this album on RYM spooks me a bit though.

RYM is fucking retarded with blind guardian, their second LP doesn't have thrash primary even though over half the damn songs on that album are voted as thrash.

this is another really good one too, this specific song is very reminiscent of metal church but a lot thrashier and harsher
