It's way harder to make interesting sound design with hardware than it is with software, due to the limited options you have, which have pretty much all been explored already, whereas in the digital world new unexplored things are coming out all the time and you have so many more ways of combining them with other tech (with the arguable disadvantage of not having a timbre/character as pleasant as their analog counterparts).

Plugins for the most part are way too distracting and you really just end up sounding like the next guy who also might have slightly tweaked a preset or whatever.
