I've listened to city pop here and there but nothing even comes close to Piper's "Summer Breeze" album. Any recs on stuff that sounds like that? I tried listening to other Piper albums but nothing scratches that itch.

NINETEEN HUNDRED EIGHTIES JAPANESE POP MUSIC IS HORRID —ALONG WITH VIRTUALLY ALL MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD DURING THE SAME DECADE—, YET, IT IS THE MOST LISTENED TO, AND EVEN FETISHIZED, JAPANESE MUSIC BY PEOPLE OUTSIDE JAPAN...

... INTERESTING.

I've always been peeved that with the eception of Timely!!! City Pop has always been more single-driven than album driven, which sucks because the genre has some great records.
One that always does the trick for me during summer is Carlos Toshiki's Omega Tribe, especially picrel which is one of the most unique City Pop recordings ever. It's a recording of a Hawaiian radio station broadcasting a bloc of Omega Tribe songs from Carlos Toshiki, and it's one of the most immersive summer albums ever. It makes you feel like you're in an episode of Magnum P.I.

>How did Japan do it better than the west.
They let disco and jazz influences from the 70s merge with new wave and yacht rock more organically, which the U.S did not do as much given there was a stronger backlash to disco and horn-driven R&B that made it evolve quicker and less organically with some exceptions like Prince.
Also, they had Yamashita.

Incredible how hard this is for some people to grasp but if "Thing, Japan" makes you fume with rage then I shouldn't be *too* surprised. Either way, being slightly behind the times works to city pop's advantage. There's nowhere near as much digital synth or programmed drums slop, and I ignore those anyway

City pop is a mandela effect, this shit didn't exist in the 80s and whoever is running the simulation REALLY wants people to ignore that Japan was experiencing a massive real estate bubble back then. When it popped the country was close to third-world tier until "investors" magically resuscitated their economy.

BY THE LAST DECADE OF THE SHOUWA ERA, JAPANESE POP MUSIC BECAME MONOPOLIZED BY ANGLO INFLUENCE, WHICH IS WHY THERE WAS SUCH ANODYNE, KITSCHY, KAWAII DRIVEL SUCH AS «CITY POP», AND THE STATE OF JAPANESE MUSIC, IN GENERAL, WORSENED IN THE HEISEI ERA.

IN THE REIWA ERA, JAPANESE MUSIC IS STARTING TO HEAL.

I like City Pop but Japan has so much better music. Like its nice but are there any like ground-breaking masterpiece albums in the City Pop genre? Genuine question.
Idk maybe I'm just a pretentious tool but even an easy-listening genre like bossa nova has albums I can point to as genre-pushing. Please educate my ignorant ass.

Have none of you guys ever listened to Takanaka, or any Japanese jazz fusion from the 70s for that matter? It's Brazilian-influenced Japanese music that hugely influenced City Pop.

A little bit. I liked Brasilian Skies and Casiopea. Not sure if I'd call them masterpieces though. Kind of embarrassing of that anon to trash on bossa while praising city pop like bro they're the same shit, different asshole (said with kindness)

>I liked Brasilian Skies and Casiopea.
His first six albums are really great stuff. You can tell where city pop pioneers like Onuki or Yamashita got a lot of early influence from given they took New Wave and Yacht Rock influences and merged it with that laid-back Jazz fusion sound he ushered into the zeitgeist in the mid to late 70s.
But yeah people console warring over Brazilian v. Japanese music are retarded given how uniquely symbiotic the relationship is between the two, often literally in the case of people like Takanaka or Toshiki.
