extraordinarily different bands

druggy losers who let themselves disintegrate after years of irrelevance aren't appealing. cobain died at around the peak of his fame, people had to be reminded who staley was from years ago. cobain wrote all the songs, staley generally only wrote lyrics (unless cantrell did it already because staley was off doing drugs somewhere or something) and very rarely wrote music let alone played guitar
one was a romanticised tragic genius, the other was a talented druggy who let everything fall to waste

I think its more of a love/hate thing. Unfortunately, blasting himself at the height of fame was probably the best possible career move. Now he lives on in the minds of /mu/posters rent free.

He sang for a metal band.
They never went as pop as Metallica did.
So they stayed mostly in the niche of rock bands with a heavy sound.

It's very telling that they peaked on charts with a semi-acoustic album with some cool clay figurines video that was more appealing to the mainstream public.

If they stayed on that course or wrote a more tuneful song like Black Hole Sun, they would have become more popular. Also a lot of their music is very morose and downbeat, with sludgy riffs. Not so appealing for normies
