Yeah but you would have had to actively seek that out, as proven by you posting on fucking /mu/ of all places in 2025. If you just exist in the pop-cultural soup as most people do then you have no reason to go out and buy albums, which is a different situation to how things were even 20 years ago. I can remember buying CDs and things with/for friends for new albums we were excited about in the moment. This is an experience kids don't have anymore because now you get excited for stuff on spotify or god forbid tiktok. In order for you to have become a person with a music collection who listens to albums you had to start with the collective back catalogue of mankind.

For the vast majority of human history you had to buy physical copies of things dumby. This encouraged people to go out and meet likeminded people in specialist retailers like record stores, get recommendations from people behind the counter, and so on. You would hear something on the radio and then, if you wanted to hear it again on your own time, you had to go out and BUY the fucking record.

The point isn't that buying stuff is good, the point is that buying stuff forced you to connect with what you were listening to. The instant gratification of streaming a single on demand didn't exist.

Streaming is great if you know what you're doing already but if you don't; if you didn't grow up in that old environment to form attachments to artists and music, and you're not a nerd who posts on 4chan, then you're just going to get sucked into an algorithmic loop by it.
