Learn all of the basic major and minor open chord / barre chords and triads first, then move onto suspended, diminished, augmented and 7th chords. There is no genre that will only use specific chords and keys. Anyone ever had a guitar/bass with a dead note?
I recently got a new guitar and the 12th fret G has a third of the sustain of every other note.
It's not the fret work, if I detune the string a tone, the problem moves to the 10th fret. So frequency of that G seems to get sucked up by the guitars resonance.
It also slightly effects G notes on the B and D strings, but it's far less noticeable.

Focus on pieces of music that push your skill level and force you to learn new techniques / chords. Practice with a metronome as well as with the song. Try to learn songs by ear as much as possible before going to tabs / YouTube. Voicing is just various ways to play the notes in a chord. An e major can be played in over 70 different voicings across the fretboard in standard tuning. Every voicing is going to have its own unique tonal characteristics and opportunities to add melodies around that chord depending on where on the fretboard you play it. For instance if you voice your chord progression with open strings it would have more of a droning melancholy feel (something like my sacrifice by creed)

No, a voicing is just how and where you fret the chord. If it’s a triad (3 notes) then you could play in many different octaves on many different strings with or without open strings etc as long as it has those 3 notes its the same chord but it’s going to sound totally different if you play it in one octave on the bass strings vs 3 octaves higher on the treble strings.

Think of it like chords being the notes and voicings being the octave / string you play that note on. An e note on the open 6th string is going to sound way different than an octave higher on the 12th fret of the 6th string. you should find something simple to play over and practice noodling. i used to use the lofi beats channel as background for improvising, its dummy simple, the songs are pretty much all 1-4-5 chords and they change every 2 minutes or so. you can practice improvising and finding the new key by ear each time a new song starts

It’ll probably be closer to five hundred, but look for a pre 2010 MIM Standard Strat. 6 screw trem, really nice feeling neck, solid pickups. I got this one in 04 and it’s my most beat up and neglected guitar by far, took a huge fall off a skateboard one day on the way to practice but it still feels and sounds great. I regretted the paint job for a long time but it’s grown on me over the years. I painted it in a blackout after taking the Heath Ledger challenge back in the bad old days. I’d say find one now before they get even more expensive, they’re your best bet if you’re looking for the best bang for buck on a fender Strat. I still see them at GC in the used section pretty regularly, just use the serial number and look for anything 08 and prior.

So here's where I'm at with guitar: you can't just pick up a guitar and strum and pluck and have it really sing. You need to 'put something back into it' to get the instrument to move. Like when you pluck a note and it decays naturally, but if you add a little vibrato it will sustain longer. You have to return energy emotionally and spiritually to the guitar in order for it to feel alive when you play it. Have you ever noticed that some days you are on and other days you are off? That plays into it too, but what is more is the requirement to commune with the guitar in a deeper way than just manipulating it and pushing things around on the physical level.
Johnny Coltrane said something along the lines of "every time you pick up your instrument, don't put it down until you really PLAY it" and I think I understand what he meant.

I like listening to other people's music after smoking and that makes me wanna play but I always have to wait till I sober up to play guitar. For me it is kind of the opposite. I rarely smoke. But when I do while playing I feel it helps at the end of long practice sessions where I typically start cramping up and hyper focusing on the smallest mistakes.

This. Weed was my last drug related vice I kicked, it helped me escape a bad IV drug problem and I was pretty moderate with my weed intake the following decade. Last year, despite only smoking a few times a week I developed that CHS condition and any time I smoked it made me violently nauseous. I definitely have more motivation, clarity, energy, patience and a bunch of other qualities that THC tends to ruin now. I miss being able to smoke occasionally but from what I understand, CHS is like a permanent physiological change in your body and pretty much permanent, if you start smoking again with any regularity it comes back.

I finally got all the materials to replace the dpdt toggle on my bass and I'm having the absolute hardest time getting the solder to even melt on the tip of the iron. I've got the tool at the highest temp. I really don't want to go to guitar center and pay 50 bucks to replace it, but I've been at it for hours now. The video makes it seem so easy.

Doing an open A chord with just one finger is common. I think people doing it with 3 fingers are retards because up higher on the neck, there is literally no space for 3 stacked fingers. You can stack the fingers into a triangle shape that is similar to the actual letter A. That lets you pull some fingers off to do some fills and neat things. Don't worry if you play a chord not perfectly as a book says so. Work within your means. Not all strings have to ring out either all the time. Muted strings are OK too at first. We all strive for perfection but it's not easy to get there and not always possible.

When you play your open A with one finger do you use your middle finger on an angle as kind of a barre pressing all the strings? If yes use your ring finger to press on the nail of the middle finger. It stacks on top of the middle finger basically giving it extra strength. It also helps release it from touching (muting) the high e string. Long story short, this is how I play my A's too. It lets me do A-shape barre chords up the neck easier too. Really it's great that you do it your way because barre chords become much easier to do later on.

Nah when I bar an A I use only my index with the rest of my fingers floating, or I bar with my index and use my pinky on the E string and my ring and middle are floating. When I bar with just my index I can mute the E string with the middle of my index finger but when playing fast it’s easy to get sloppy and accidentally fret an A6 and that changes the feel of the song and chord

Well if you have any spare fingers, try using them to help out your fingering finger for extra pressing pressure if possible. It's not always doable, but why not try...

You can always bend the neck of the fretboard a bit using your arm of the picking hand (not the hand since it's busy picking), but rather the arm pinning the guitar against your body. Adds a bit of leverage. It's one of those tips I picked up on the barre chord secrets videos on YT. It helps a lot.

I know a lot of theory basics, mostly the abstracts though. For instance I know how to use the major and minor scale to derive intervals, and I have the shapes memorized and can run through them easily, and I even know a bit about modes and chord theory with triads and CAGED.
