What happened with him specifically is for the first album Christopher Cross was a band, a group of four of them that kept playing around San Antonio since their teen years. And they play all their instrument parts on it. The label wanted Christopher as a solo artist since the beginning and wanted the other gone so they slowly forced them out by bringing in session musicians to make them redundant. For second album they played minimally and they were gone after (though he brought back one as a co-writer for all late 80s onward content)
Right when he dropped them is when MTV generation happened, and since he was a solo artist they couldn't funnel it as a band look and take focus off him, nor really have more mysterious videos and media presentations. He became the focus and since he was not the looker it quickly fell off, alongside people kind of being done with the soft rock.
