We are the void - hated it. It was produced by then-bass player (ex guitar dude from Soilwork). It was such a major let down after Fiction.

Construct - it was enjoyable as a completely different one-off thing. It has heavy modern Katatonia vibes, at times the mix goes full shoegaze and its very thick, lacking the metal oomph from a guitar band. If you know what you are getting into, it's very solid if you like that kind of music.

Atoma - hated it. Saw them live then, wasn't any better in person. This is when they fully shifted into mid-tempo snoozefest songwriting.

Moment - worth checking out and a big improvement.

Endtime Signals - worth checking out and even bigger improvement, guitars are sounding good again. Saw them live a few months ago and they were awesome.

I admit that I am in minority about Atoma, most people in online discussions like it, and even when I saw them earlier this year Atoma songs got very heavy reactions from the crowd.

Yeah he is playing it safe and his lyrics are really formulaic nowadays. I can't hold it against him too much, I respect him a lot as a singer and a frontman, never read anything negative about him online in 20+ years of following that band.
5 of his bands released material in the last two years, that's a lot of lyrics to sift through.

Speaking of, the second The Halo Effect album is also worth checking out. I had low expectations and it's a very fun listen.

Yeah it's not a rule. I like one of the Anaal Nathrakh albums that are overproduced to shit because it makes it an assault on the ears which is kind of the point.
The problem with prog/tech though is that by them sounding modern and clean it usually makes them all sound the fucking same. That one Cynic-y bass tone makes me eyes roll whenever I hear it now.
A bit of roughness wouldn't hurt. But of course if the whole point of the technicality is fully "show off how good I am at wanking my instrument" then being clean suits, but then they might overproduce it with the chugs or botch the mix imo.

There are a number of factors, but a big thing is that heavy rock/metal production is extremely standardized and reliant on audio engineering practices that make things sound "big" (but boring). Drums are all sample-replaced, guitar amps are ampsims, takes are spliced and quantized to be perfect, vocals are double- or triple-tracked, and so on. This is all done to get a 'professional' sound that is up to the standard of other mainstream releases, but it also makes everything sound too synthetic and too similar. Even if I think they're gay and boring, Blood Incantation deserves some respect for choosing to record the old fashioned way to tape without too much studio trickery.

"Hello everyone. I guess some of you may have been wondering why it has been so silent on the At the Gates front lately. Well, in December 2023, I was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (a cancer in the mouth and pallet) and have since then gone through a lot, it has been a very tough year.

"First there was a major surgery, where they took away a big part of the roof of the mouth. This was followed by radiation therapy for two months, and eversince it has been a long hard path towards recovery. Now, in the beginning of 2025, they have found some remains of the cancer, and it is inaccessible by surgery or radiation. So, we will see what the next step is, but probably some form of chemo therapy, to keep the cancer in check.
