A good retrospective of their career and a great homage to Balance, but you might prefer other albums/versions of the songs

Very good, but yes this >>127405102. I think it's much folkier than their other work, so if you try to get into Coil through this album to start with you may be disappointed at what you hear after. Black Antlers is a better starting off point imo.

A pretty good album that is elevated by its circumstances and overall history of the band. Also my favorite cover art of all time.
I love it, but if someone were to listen to it in a complete vacuum without any knowledge of Coil or the album's reputation I wouldn't fault them for being lukewarm on it. If you're just listening to it as some mid-2000's experimental release then it's not the most profound thing, and whether it's acceptable for an album to be considered 'great' because of anything other than the music itself is a valid point to be made. You can either listen to it as a mournful epitaph for and tribute to the loss of half of the partnership of a band that stands as an institution in experimental and industrial music, or you can listen to it as some artsy boomers way past their time reworking and releasing old demos after one of them died, both are technically true and each will give you a drastically different feeling towards the music.

Adding to that
It was my first Coil and even after listening to most of their discography it might still be my favorite, even more so since i understand where it comes from
But it definitely shouldn't be representative of all of their material, they have a wide range of experimentation and most of their stuff doesn't sound like the rest, AoN is only my subjective favorite because i generally prefer the production in these versions and because of emotional connections i've made to their sound

Listen to another Coil album

Essential tourist core. These guys have like 100 releases, most of them excellent, and people just talk about this one album all the time when I wouldn't even put it in their top 10.

Coil were good enough that I don't care. If anything how dirty and sick some of their music is is enhanced by the fact that they were genuinely vile people.

It still hasn't clicked, but I'll give it another chance eventually. Musick to Play in the Dark resonates with me more. Spoken-word Jhonn is best Jhonn.

TMR is genuinely Beefheart's magnum opus as far as I'm concerned. He never attempted that style again. It is worth listening beyond Safe as Milk and TMR but TMR actually mogs, unlike this album which is not the definitive Coil record.

John died from an accident THOUGH
Fun fact: same cause of death as Sophie, but John was drunk while the other guy was just insane

Black Antlers is better in my opinion, especially with the bonus tracks, but it's still a classic homosex album

favourite band from my own country and a hypnotic and tragic masterwork

also has the best cover of the Are You Being Served theme
