Time Skiffs and Isn't It Now were both solid albums. I think that people are just mad because of how long it took them to make something decent after Merriweather (ODDSAC if we're including all releases.) Painting With is an album that a band with their credentials had no business making. Animal Collective too high estrogen to see the value of holding themselves to a certain standard and think that it's okay to regress to such an extent regardless of how inappropriate it is. Once you've made Here Comes the Indian, Sung Tongs, Feels, Strawberry Jam, and Merriweather, the time to fuck around like that has passed. It's like if Pink Floyd had gone through with the Household Objects project in 1974 after having already made Dark Side. Sure, it's legal, but you just don't do that when you've reached a certain point.
