I didn't get it and thought zoomers were basically pic related. Only now I appreciate it as a legitimate musical moment in history.

the whole lefty tranny hypercapitalist hellscape cruelty squad aesthetic is a direct offshoot of vaporwave
in other words vaporwave was gay shit for loser queers

valid, it was a transitional point to all the retro aesthetics we now deal with. although to a certain extent there's always been retro shit the nostalgia porn seems especially overwrought today.
maybe because we all know it's downhill from here

desu i dont think it even got interesting until it was basically already "over". the interesting stuff is what grew out of it. windows 96 being an obvious ex.
the old ariel pink records too. he borrowed a lot of that kind of texture for his synths. a lot of ppl borrowed that stuff and applied it in more interesting ways than the actual vaporwavers ever did

so imo its more important in the textures that it lent to other music. by itself it was mostly just another dumb trend

Yeah this. While Floral Shoppe was the memetically iconic moment that drew attention to the genre, it wasn't the most interesting music that came out of that scene.

Win96 was better, because it wasn't sample-based and it had better tunes, but didn't get as much exposure.

signalwave? broken transmission? a lot of it is just boring japanese tv music, but ct-57 is practically flawless. Road to Nowhere was my aoty for 2024.

lol thats putting it mildly
it was literally just some citypop slowed down and with crappy house drums plopped on top
add some shitty reverb et voila
maybe dump the whole recording onto a VHS tape if youre a real overachiever

Vaporwave is what music morphed into. It's sad yes. But it's the reality of the music scene as it stands in 2025. A lot of producers and people in the industry have taken the Sound of vaporwave and adopted it as their own.

The only thing that makes something vaporwave imo is the artwork. Vaporwave aesthetic is characterized by a certain visual aesthetic which I myself never understood. I think it started as kids on the internet 10 years ago just playing around with photoshop and uploading it with their favorite mixes on youtube and this turned into its own genre.

Vaporwave is basically kids at home making retarded pics and adding it to their favorite playlists. It's not really a real genre. It's just slowed-down 80s music with chinese or asian vhs material and photoshop.

An obvious example of what, something that sucks just as much but tries way harder?>>127413903
because it wasn't sample-based

It sounded like shit then and sounds even worse now. The best that can be said is that it produces a very short-lived moment of increased attention, and in some much rarer cases, actual interest. All of that disappears within 6 months (at best) when you fully understand what a completely worthless thing it is. More than worthless, it seems to come at a cost. A relevant analogy is the initial response to The Force Awakens. Those who initially liked it can't be blamed much, but (much) sooner rather than later you have to realize what a worthless, arguably destructive piece of shit it is. It will have absolutely no legacy.

People that hate on vaporwave are the real terrorists. You're not gonna see someone jammin to vaporwave shoot a school up. Like it's the most chill music there is. People study and sleep to it.

>starwars fag
You literally are retarded anon, you will never get that vaporwave came as a reaction to and was mocking people like you specifically. Slop-media and simulation governs your stupid troglodyte brain and every thought you have, and vaporwave was a very short lived escape from that through acceleration for some of us. Sadly but predictably, it died when people like you started paying attention to it.

But windows96 is quite mediocre, that much is correct. And sample free vaporwave is a bigger gimmick than plunderphonics

I don't like a single Star Wars movie you illiterate cunt. I used that specific movie, in that specific year, as an analogy for a niche of people who were initially interested in the genre and then quickly came to the realization that it has null or negative value. And while I generally never drop bona fides in contexts like this, "I was there" very fucking early, have spoken in-depth to almost every major and minor character in the scene, and even released more than one album on more than one "major" (lol) label (not vaporwave but in a realm where many of those who liked it would have run into it, like it or not). You've vastly overrated even your idealized version of whatever brief time period you overvalue. As for your last two sentences, we simply agree.

Ok, I apologize then. I assumed you were a starwars fag because you seemed to put value on the franchise by saying the new movies were "destructive", implying there was something of artistic or cultural value before to be destroyed in the first place.

What "major" label did you release on, if you dont mind me asking?
>inb4 dmt tapes
And who did you get to interact with? I was mostly just and observer, never made any music but I did make some visual art and covers for some people, no one major tho

I won't say because with a few more questions it will be very obvious who I am. You can choose to believe I'm lying, though I'm not. But I can say that it wasn't DMT Tapes.
>And who did you get to interact with?
Think of a name of well known or significant people in this context between 2014 and 2020 and I've almost certainly spoken at length with them, and if not, they know me or know of me.

Ok I once hypostatisized that one of the things chillwave did was to open up the vertical horizontality of the past. vaporwave supposedly functions in that some place of expanded vertical horizontality of the past. also this happens to stand at a place that metaphysics has often prioritized a place of presence or absence. there have been a lot of arguments between chillwave or vaporwave I do not want to get into that just that it is a likely potentially the same or a similar theoretical plane.
