Speed Metal is literally just Thrash Metal. At some point it was renamed Thrash Metal I guess because Speed Metal was seen as too old fashioned a descriptor. There was a genre called Thrash that were bands like Suicidal Tendencies and D.R.I., but they were also renamed to Crossover.

Im no expert on the matter but I think its a subtle diffrence in the vocals and guitar riffs. The vocals tend to be more melodic, traditional heavy metal style, and the guitar riffs tend to have more long strings of alternate picking. Like chuggachuggachuggachuggachugga. That kinda thing.

Speed Metal is a real genre. Its just heavy metal but faster, or like proto-thrash metal. But in the early 80s everything was developing pretty fast and so everything was called speed metal or power metal(its why metallicas first demo is called power metal, pic related also). Years ago I was at some metal gig with my friend and during the pauses we would sit in a table and some Thrash vest guy joined our company. Every time I would leave the table to get more beer he would shit talk about my T-shirt (I was wearing Beherit t-shirt) and telling my friend "I don't like that dude and that band, not good..." but every time I would come back to the table he would be friendly, but keep shit talking behind my back to my friend when I was not at the table.
