What's /mu/'s thoughts on tom waits? I've been listening to bone machine and rain dogs and I think he's pretty cool.

I used to dislike him. However I loved Goin' Out West so much that I finally listened to his entire catalog. Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Frank's Wild Years and Bone Machine are amazing, he has later some good stuff like Mule Variations and Real Gone, I don't care about his earlier stuff since it's too derivative and safe. I still think he'd be nothing without Beefheart's influence, but he's one of the best to ever do it really.

It's funny, for years the Tom Waits cult was dominated by boomer oldheads who hated his later experimental stuff and preferred his early ballad style, while nowadays you'd be hard-pressed to find a Gen X or later fan who has even heard his 70s stuff or has any genuine respect for it if they have.

X'ers pushed Rain Dogs as his best era, so a generation of kids who read music blogs and p4k got into him through that. It fit pretty well into the quirky culture of the late 00s/early 10s.

The greatest.
And an underrated guitarist too. Whenever he plays guitar on a song it's so obviously him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbIi8ZiW5qI

I never understood people saying this outside of his very early 70s albums where he's leaning into a character a lot more. I never see people complain about someone like David Bowie for overtly doing different characters throughout his career either. Plus it's obvious that his voice has just become legitimately raspy from singing 'wrong' like that for years and years combined with smoking a lot until about 1980.

Idk why you replied to me, I'm saying his voice isn't 'fake'. It's a weird criticism of a singer anyway since most singers put on a voice.

Unpopular opinion: Bad As Me was a great album and on-par with albums like Rain Dogs and Bone Machine. I love the higher energy and clean production. It sounds less like music from a rusted out shack or an abandoned barn than his other stuff from the past few decades and more like music from a night out on the town. It makes me sad that I hardly ever see its existence even acknowledged, I really don't get it.

I don't really care about celebrity deaths; to date the only one that really hit me hard was David Bowie.
But I don't know how I'll handle Tom Waits dying whenever he does. I don't know what it is about him, man. There isn't anyone else quite like him.

Is this an unpopular opinion? I always thought this one was really solid. I started getting into his stuff right when this came out and I was like "Damn, this guy has been doing it for decades and still has good records" but then he basically retired.
Side note, there is a recent video of him playing Waltzing Matilda for some documentary on homelessness or something and for the first time I thought fuck man he looks so old. I'm probably gonna cry when Tom Waits dies

It feels weird that this was only his third album. He spent the whole 70s trying to nail down a particular arsthetic and testing what approaches worked, be they smoky ballads or jazz-poetry scenes, so something like this feels more like a culmination than a just step on the path.
