Love this band in particular. Some of the absolute best heavy metal from the '70s, and their early '80s material is excellent too. Sadly everything after LaFS is pretty inessential, outside of a few songs here and there.

I'm finally making the full plunge into Kraft Dinner's classic catalogue. Right now I'm on Abigail and after five songs in, this is already a new personal favorite. Taken by Force. If you haven't listened that LP before, make it your #1 priority. Then listen to Tokyo Tapes afterwards, it's their live album from '78 and much like Unleashed in the East enhances several of their previous songs. Particularly Fly to the Rainbow and We'll Burn the Sky.

I don't remember ever listening to this song. I'll check it out in a bit, right now I'm listening to Hittman's debut from '88. It's pretty much just discount early Queensryche, but there's some decent material here and there. Track 3's a bit of a clunker though, very glammy and the hook isn't anything to write home about; so it just kind of goes in one ear out the other.

The main riff and the way it repeats is reminiscent of early heavy metal, maybe with a bit more crunch due to the heavy guitar tone; but I'd still just call Overdose hard rock. I'll post a song that's more or less the same structure as that one, but note the increased heaviness and less gaps between chords:

I hear it. Compared to everything else from that time it is a very raw tone. Yeah, I think you'd either be looking at that AC/DC album or early Motorhead (specifically Ace of Spades) for the origin of that noisy guitar tone.

AC/DC's influence was more so '80s than the '70s but with a few acts that sprouted up in 78-79 you can pick up some influence. Namely Def Leppard. (Although when I listen to OTTN I hear a lot more Thin Lizzy and UFO rather than AC/DC. The influence is undeniable on High 'n' Dry and Pyromania, though.)

Watched the Lee Kerslake documentary last night, well made but also extremely depressing. It's pretty fucked up how sick he was in his final years - one of the OG heavy rock drummers reduced to living in a council flat and waddling around in ill-fitting tracksuit bottoms, a weightlifting back brace and Crocs. Actually the only reason why Sharon finally sent him his Platinum records for Blizzard and Diary is that this was getting quite a lot of press during the production and even the Osbournes probably realized it would've been a bad look to keep ignoring it.

Starts off with some promising USPM and for most of its runtime it's a pretty fun listen, but it starts to seriously lose steam by the end with an overlong "epic" that doesn't go anywhere until about 7 minutes in, and a cover of Kill the King that has none of the energy nor urgency the original does. The production is also subpar too, quite heavy on the reverb with not a lot of crunch to the guitars and in general the album just sounds pretty flat. My personal picks from the record:

I only heard of them from browsing Metallum. EXCELLENT resource for finding weird and obscure bands, and I'd also recommend RYM, too. Just make sure you sort by esoteric otherwise you'll just get a bunch of popular releases.
> I really wish I delved into American trad heavy/power metal more instead of just NWOBHM.
Do it, man! American trad/USPM is a goldmine of quality '80s metal. And while the sound has largely died off in recent years, there were plenty of releases in the sub-genre until roughly 1991-1992. If all you've heard are the basics like Helstar, Metal Church, etc., here are some hidden gems from the classic era of that sound:

Attacker - The Second Coming (1988)
Emerald - Armed for Battle (1986)
Jack Starr's Burning Starr - No Turning Back! (1986)
Hexx - No Escape (1984)
Hexx - Under the Spell (1986)
Laaz Rockit - City's Gonna Burn (1984)
Leatherwolf - Leatherwolf (1987)
Meliah Rage - Kill to Survive (1988) (Power/thrash)
Messiah Force - The Last Day (1987)
Powerlord - The Awakening (1986)
Sanctuary - Into the Mirror Black (1990)

American metal (and this is especially apparent with USPM) is generally more aggressive whereas European metal is more melodic. And the aggressive nature of USPM/American trad means it'd overlap with speed metal more often. If you really want to get down to the basics USPM is quite literally just traditional heavy metal with heavier/and or faster riffing, and a more theatrical singing style. Here's a song that illustrates the lack of divide between USPM and speed perfectly.

Do NOT sleep on Lady of the Lake! But with that being said, Gates of Babylon is the best Rainbow song. You know what my favorite aspect of that one is? The fact that even if you didn't have ANY vocals on the song, you could still get a fairly accurate idea of what the song's conveying just from Ritchie's guitarwork. Blackmore was fucking masterclass at painting pictures without words, but I think Gates is quite possibly his best work in that regard.

In particular, I'm leaning towards removing Slayer from the non-allowed material since after listening to Hell Awaits and remembering most of Reign in Blood; there's only about a handful of songs from their classic era I'd say are unacceptable for this general. The rest of their output is pretty acceptable in my opinion.

This album is really fucking good in just about every aspect and has some surprisingly advanced songwriting at points. Wholeheartedly recommended!

They're one of my guilty pleasure bands.

I wouldn't even call early Leppard a guilty pleasure band. They more than had the chops to be taken seriously, and they were very prominent in the NWOBHM.

Listening to one last record for the night. Any fans of Hexx's first two albums here?

Any of you guys like Hexx's first two albums? I think they were an excellent power/thrash outfit in the mid-80s, comparable to Metal Church but with a heavier, grittier sound.

I like the vocals. It kind of reminds of Styx.
