What does /mu/ think of Blur?

Damon Albarn is actually a bad singer who's made the best of it. Not just one band, but two. I admire him. What all of us bad singers could hope for.

Their earlier stuff reminds me of Cardiacs a little bit. Blur on really fucked up drugs was the first thing I thought of when I heard them. I think they supported the Essex lads once or twice.

Blur were the mummy's boys โ€“ they were all college students from the outskirts of London. They went to starve in London, but it was by choice, to give themselves some sort of aura of disrespectability. I did like the Blur, but they were never anywhere near Oasis โ€“ not for humor, not for originality, not for songs, not for presentation. All they had was Damon Albarn dancing about. Fair enough, Blur made great records, but they were always shit on stage, whereas Oasis were the gear.

Don't particularly care for them, but I like 'There's No Other Way' a lot for some reason. Maybe because it's reminiscent to those jingly advert tunes I used to hear a lot on TV as a kid

Always liked both Blur and Oasis as a kid. Since the Oasis reunion had a little relisten to both.

Oasis are like a fast food chain. Simple but MEGA and hits the spot. Noel Gallagher had a great ear for melody and he hides his sensitive lyrics behind his Mancunian bravado. Liam's voice is unbelievable. Made 2 albums i can listen to no skips maybe 3

Blur are the better and more daring musicians. Damon's voice when he's doing punk/rock grates a bit but on tender stuff like No Distance Left To Run is so aching. Coxon is a very unique guitarist, James actually can play bass. Blur never made an album i can no skip.

Watching both Oasis and Blur docs, Oasis are way funnier, Blur are alcoholics you have to admire Damon and Noel's drive to succeed

Combined group
Drums: Alan White
Bass: James
Guitar: Coxon
Solo guitar: Noel
Singer: Liam
Songwriter: Damon+Noel

I used to like Blur better but I've come around to Oasis' superiority. Blur is good, There's No Other Way, Song 2, Girls & Boys and Beetlebum are classics, but sometimes I wished they embraced a harder rock sound instead of silly britpop fodder

Damon talked a good game and Blur's record company were quite happy to fuck around (and, as it were, find out). Oasis were oddly the most passive party in all this.

S/T was my first rock album and got me into rock music (I got into them through Gorillaz when I was a kid). Huge influence growing up, but I only really cared for the later, alt-rock and Radioheadish stuff. The britpop never jived with me, probly because I'm not a brit.

Also The Magic Whip was a good comeback album.
