Music is a creative endeavour. Creativity extends further than being able to think up pretty melodies and words, creative people look at the world around and think, "maybe we could do this better if we changed X, or did Y differently." Wanting to change things with the aim of improving society is the essence of progressive politics.
On the other hand, the desire to keep things much as they are, or even revert to previous ways of doing things, is the essence of conservative politics.
Both the above are simplistic interpretations, but broadly hold true.
