Orange Claw Hammer was one of my least favorite tracks. It wasn't until Beefheart and Zappa performed it in '75 that I realized it is a sea shanty, and a pretty good one at that.
The version in the studio is good, but they performed it live when Frank and Don were still talking to each other, and Frank turned it into a Neil Young/Crazy Horse song, which is okay but he added an unnecessary-extended guitar solo, because Frank.
It's worth listening to all versions.
