No "Talentless Hack" Ever Wrote A Verse Like This
>And some people got no choice
>And they can never find a voice
>To speak with that they can even call their own
>So the first thing that they see
>That allows them the right to be
>Why, they follow it
>You know, it's called bad luck
Songwriting is for people that couldn’t hack it in poetry.

Lou Reed is a good example of someone who isn't a talentless hack.
People only say he was because he had a below average singing voice and wasn't much of a guitarist, that isn't 'talent' though. The talent part is that he could write good songs regardless of these limitations.

Anybody can write a song, critics and English majors overrate songwriting.

[Verse 1]
When I was a young man, no bigger than this
A chocolate egg cream was not to be missed
Some U-Bet's Chocolate Syrup, seltzer water mixed with milk
Stir it up into a heady fro, tasted just like silk
[Chorus]
You scream, I steam, we all want egg cream
You scream, I steam, we all want egg cream
[Verse 2]
Now you can go to Junior's, Dave's on Canal Street
I think there's Ken's in Boston, must be something in L.A
But Becky's on Kings Highway was the egg cream of choice
Hey if you don't believe me, go ask any of the boys
[Chorus]
You scream, I steam, we all want egg cream, ah
You scream, I steam, we all want egg cream
[Verse 3]
The only good thing I remember about P.S. 92
Was the egg cream served at Becky's, it was a fearsome brew
For 50 cents you got a shot, choco bubbles up your nose
That made it easier to deal with knife fights and kids pissing in the street

>Anybody can write a song,
Yeah and a lot of them are going to suck. Songwriting isn't just the lyrics, it's the entire art of making the song. You could have a bunch of lyrics that read well but that's irrelevant if they don't fit into the song properly, which also comes down to how your voice can get them to sound in the song.
One of the big talents of Bob Dylan for example is being able to be very wordy in a way that doesn't sound stupid in his songs.
Lou Reed created a lot of crap as well but he's remembered for his good stuff.

Are you retarded? Writing lyrics is not songwriting.
