Yard works against the commodified social spaces which dominate London’s culture and community. Rather than a club or venue, Yard is a DIY public space which prompts the natural impulse to gather, play and create, something that otherwise has no outlet in our modern cities. Operating as a grassroots & collectively driven platform, Yard takes the energy of a hangout at home and brings it to community.

I have to disagree with the idea that Yard is some kind of antidote to the commodified social spaces in London. Sure, it sounds nice to think of it as a DIY public space that encourages gathering and creativity, but let’s be real: it’s not a magic solution.

Commodified venues, for all their flaws, provide structure and safety that a DIY space often lacks. Not everyone feels comfortable in a free-for-all environment, and the notion that everyone can just come together and create is overly simplistic. It ignores the reality that many people are excluded from these grassroots initiatives, whether due to lack of access, resources, or simply not fitting into the vibe.

So while Yard might have good intentions, it doesn’t really tackle the deeper issues at play. We need to recognize that simply creating a space isn’t enough; it has to be inclusive and accessible to truly make a difference.
