John Fahey
Why does nobody on /mu/ talk about him? He's amazing.

For the record I post a thread about him nearly weekly. Don't usually get s lot of responses but I'm trying to improve the board that used to be special. What he did with one guitar is amazing, vast stories and feelings without a word being said

as big of a fan as I am (i cycle through 10 records of his) I hadn't heard it til today. Sounded great but as with most Fahey I find repeat listens only enhance them. I got into him through Fare Forward Voyagers, then I got into America, God Time and Casualty, and finally Legend of Blind Joe Death is my current favorite (also enjoy great santa barbara oil slick live album). I love listening to him but ill say trying to play his songs is an amazing sensation when you put the right effort into it

City of Refuge [Tim/Kerr, 1997]
"My category is alternative, period," avers the last intelligent person to make such a claim in this millennium. He doesn't want to be folk or New Age, and who can blame him? But if he were, some rich dunderhead might insist that he treat blues and pop rarities to his dolorously deliberate touch, like on those old Reprise albums Byron Coley sneers at. Instead he's encouraged to stagger toward an obscure destination mere mortals would noodle around, dumbfounding bystanders with the scraps of sound that flake off his beard as he goes. Once in a while tunes poke through the refuse, notably that of "Chelsey Silver, PleaseCall Home." These occasion proud huzzahs from young fools who can only forgive themselves such emoluments after a good cleansing scourge of spare solo indirection. Their self-disgust is our loss and Fahey's ticket to wankdom. Even the meandering Cul de Sac get more out of him. C+

Yeah, agreed. For me it's not just instrumental, it's specifically one-instrument music. There's a peculiar intensity in that distillation. Like painting in monochrome, you can't rely on color for contrast, so everything has to come from inside. That pressure forces tighter, more inventive and concentrated music. That's the best way I can describe it. I'll always argue for the supremacy of one-instrument music.

That's a shame. Instrumental music is timeless and more powerful and emotional than vocals with lyrics specifically telling you what to feel when you listen to the music. You will understand one day

Amazing rendition of Wine And Roses, which later got renamed as The Red Pony, which got eventually renamed as The Approaching Of The Disco Void. Fahey literally stopped playing that one because he got scared by it in the end.

City of Refuge was his first good album since 1983. In fact his last period has some of his career's highlights such as Womblife or The Mill Pond:

Yeah I first knew it as red pony and I'd describe it as such and eventually someone told me it was wine and roses originally. Repurposing old songs is respectful because sometimes a song wasn't been perfected when you put it to tape and it takes the right mind to reexplore your ideas

I remember reading somewhere that Fahey improvised the whole thing while drunk, but since he achieved to compose big suites before and after this one I don't know if I buy that. If that's true this is one of the best recorded improvisations in music history. My favourite tracks of the album are Knott's Berry Farm Molly and Sail Away Ladies.

playing guitar certainly makes a difference, for non musicians it takes high attentiiveness to pay attention to the melodic subtleties but I'd say anyone who really likes music could do it, its not far from how jazz uses non typical melodies to create more unique feelings, that but he does it all with a singular instrument, Fare Forward Voyagers is a great song to see what hes capable of
