Listened to the leak earlier today and is pretty great, I'm hearing bits and pieces of Filter, Duran Duran and Faith No More in these songs I dunno if that was by design or not. But 30 years after Adrenaline was released Deftones are not only thriving but arguably they're more popular now than in their White Pony heyday. Fav tracks: my mind is a mountain, ecdysis, infinite source, cut hands, milk of the madonna.

Ohms is quite literally their worst record and everybody claiming otherwise must be completely deaf. Even Gore and Adrenaline are better than that dull and lifeless creation

Songwriting and vocals in particular were frighteningly atrocious, I thought they were finally done for after that album. Thankfully, PM is better than the last two.

First impression, it's fine. Infinite Source and Souvenir are the best songs, Cut Hands and Metal Dream come up in the back half too. I was worried after those singles but they're among the worst on the album, especially Milk of the Madonna. Probably would still put it in bottom half overall but it's better than I was expecting.

First impressions after listening to the audio while watching the visualizers (while also stoned and drunk)
>mmiam = this album’s version of genesis (I.e the song chino loves but no one else does)
>infinite source = best song they’ve had in a while
>souvenir = luv it
>I think about you all the time = the Missus’ favourite song on the album. Her favourite album is WP for reference
>milk of the maddona = better of the two singles and one of the best on the album
>departing the body = wife was scared of the visuals until I pointed out the walls Will ooze green slime. Reminded me of those creepy ps3 adverts
Overall, need to listen again with my proper headphones and then compare to the other albums. Pleasantly surprised, will go to bed happy and cummed out (and have to wake up in two hours)

Why isn't anyone pointing out that this is their most shoegaze album? Chino's vocals are now fully in the mix. He's no longer singing over it and certainly not screaming anymore. They're creating soundscapes now. It's cool, but it'll take a while to digest.
For me, this is them pivoting to rock for good. They're now a rock band with metal passages, not the other way around. The pseudo-rap parts prove there won't be any more screaming.
I'm a fan, but people don't like the idea of Deftones being trend-hoppers. They always have been (except for White Pony). The point is, they've never lost their identity, from Diamond Eyes trying to appeal to the Buttrock/Metalcore crowd, to Gore pivoting to the Hipster Metal crowd, and now it's the TikTok nu-gaze crowd.
For me, this album is the equivalent of Diamond Eyes, reaching a new audience but becoming slightly generic along the way. I think it won't be long before they release another, perhaps a more powerful one.

To be fair, removing the Djent riffs is the boldest thing they could have done with this.

7/10 at the moment

What's impressive about it? It's like a bad mix of Mein and Swerve City and with little of interest to show for it aside from what, a KNY-ism of a break towards the end that doesn't even add anything to it? Unoriginal, boring, derivative, and leaning too hard into pop; I hate this band, and with this being my first impression, I don't think I'll listen to enough of them to dispute that. The singer is just shamelessly copying Chino Moreno's vocal habits all over this, and the riffs are so boring and typical that it's boggling to see how this even gets any praise. It feels like trendhopping of the highest degree in the same way Bleed, Fleshwater, and Static Dress do. Repulsive.

It's the (likely accidental) theming that does it for me. Whether Chino realizes it or not, SNW is a very consistently anxious and uncertain album. The instability of the band comes through the music in a way that makes it the band's...I guess "darkest" album? I liken it to Pornography by The Cure, shit was falling apart and it feels evident throughout the entire album. Even a cut like Konami Code feels lonely and nocturnal, or Pink Cellphone's deadpan delivery suggests some kind of weary, existential struggle with higher powers, never mind how self-evident it is on songs like Hole In The Earth or Cherry Waves. The band probably weren't pulling themselves together to pursue those ideas but it ends up happening that way regardless, and I find that aspect of it attractive.

I don't generally skip songs on albums so for me, whether something is a "skip" or not is a nonfactor. I'm more likely to avoid an album entirely than skip songs. Case in point, I don't get much out of Around the Fur aside from 3 or 4 very good songs, so I almost never put that one on at all and when I do, I still don't skip anything.

Diamond Eyes has memorable grooves. I love that album but people do have a point in citing that one as the turning point when Stephen shifted too hard into djent chugs, but at least touches of their Adrenaline era post-hardcore angularity show up here and there. Songs like Royal, CMND/CTRL and Rocket Skates get at that more than you'd probably think about.
