Idk, just go listen to the classics. RYMtards have good selections at the top of their genre rankings. Make sure to check out records from different subgenres to find out what you like. Also remember, that if something is initially off-putting, but intriguing, then it might be a good idea to try to stick with it, because it might click. I used to hate death metal way back in the day, but nowadays it's mostly what I listen to.

SOAD is the perfect starting ground for metal imo. You get tight riffs, good low-end, some growls and blast beats here and there, but it stays teenage-friendly and melodic. It's the perfect mix of gay and trve.
Then you get into Gojira which are basically the SOAD of death metal.
Then you get into whatever, you make your own journey. You lurk.

Start here. The only band to ever manage to fuse hip hop and metal and have it work, and it was pretty much just this one album they got it perfect.
