Right, since nobody seems to have the balls to say it, i will. His solos are all very medicore, lacks melody and personality, no memorable moments or any thing just monotonous noodling. It's not a 'le boomer and pentatonic' thing because many guitarists like that do have great solos. he is a riff master though

I think people like him for the songs, not for the solos. Nobody ever talks about his solos.

Yep, the Neon Knights solo is pure kino. Great keyboards from Geoff Nicholls underneath it, too.

Iommi didn't make particularly memorable lead breaks on the classic Sabbath albums but he did have more solo-ing in the 80s albums, H&H title track and Trashed have killer lead breaks.

He was heavily copping Mick Abrahams in the early days, even down to lifting entire song passages.

It’s just a different concept of guitar solos, it’s not some desperate for attention everybody look at me solo, it’s more just a melodic interlude for the mood of the track. It’s not really supposed to stand out, more just a part of the overall journey of the song.

They sound fine to me. And I'd rather hear him than some effeminate sounding power metal shit from the '80s that utilizes every conceivable scale pattern.

His solos have no interesting melodies though. I don't want my music to just be white noise lol.

He's missing like 3 fingertips, you absolute retard faggot. You couldn't play a better solo with all 10 of your fingers if your LIFE depended on it, retard. Prove me wrong right now. Vocaroo is free and easy. Let's hear you shred Eddie Van GAYlen

Major Sabbath fan. Tbh I was trying to think of their best solos and I got stumped and I know their first 4 albums back to front. I know I love fairies wear boots but I couldn't play it's solo in my head if I tried. I remember one of the ones on the first album are great maybe the warning? They escape me

His solos on sabotage are great but it’s because of the tone, not the note choices

Planet Caravan? Rat Salad? The Straightener?
Just because they aren't shredslop doesn't mean they aren't good. God I hate how much people overrate shredsloppa so much. People can't appreciate a simple solo.

I'm not making any argument that shredding is superior in soloing some of my favorite solos are short tasteful guitar interludes. All I'm saying is I can't play them in my head from memory and they used to be in my top 5 most listened to artists. Gilmour and Page are more memorable on the solo end

nah, this lead line sounds sick, and of course, op is certified homo.

I disagree entirely. His leads are phenomenal musically even if they’re not all that technical. The real problem is that since Black Sabbath is a 1 guitar band, his leads are played over top of his rhythm playing in the studio, something that can’t be duplicated live though they managed well enough.

>I can't play them in my head from memory
Can you play jazz solos from memory in your head? Not all solos are supposed to be that way. They can also be fun moments where someone can "noodle" over the song without worrying about overpowering others. It's even better when soloists interact with the band.

Always liked the Ancient Warrior solo. There's some great guitar playing on the Martin albums.

He's also a very good blues player.

Ritchie Blackmore actually said that he thought Paranoid was a crap song carried by its guitar solo, which he praised for being "full of intensity".

I love Blackmore, hands down the better melodicist and soloist, but he's kind of a massive ding-dong. Wish they would have collaborated, especially pretty early on as that could have yielded some excellent results (see Wakeman on Sabbra Cadabra), but Blackmore seems to be impossible to work with.

Well yeah, his solos are literally multitrack noodling with a bunch of delay. It's basically filler. But it's kind of good too, and his riffs are unbeatable. Also it may just be production but pic related actually had really good riffs and solos.

On a sidenote, I think this was what grunge learned from Iommi the most. After Sabbath, metal just went further and further into shredding. Nothing wrong with that, but Grunge brought it back to where Iommi reigned supreme and reminded everyone rock is still cool without the complex leads.
