Really helpful in terms of cataloging what you listen to and there’s some great lists and charts that can be useful. Just take the ratings with a grain of salt because for the last decade, the user base has just been pic rel

If you know how to properly take advantage of its database, it is the single greatest website for finding new music. It's also a great tool for cataloging your own music journey.

The site itself is pretty useful. You can catalog all of the music you listen to and it will automatically generate recommendations.

The critical flaw is the user base. Before like 2016 and especially before covid the site was basically 100% boomer music nerds / dad types. Now it's damn near entirely retarded discord trannies so you should take more recent ratings with a grain of salt (especially anything that shoots to the top of the charts just cause that bald youtube fag liked it)

the site actually started going downhill with the iPhone and social media late 2000s

I only use it to discover new music. I don't give a shit about the ratings.

great for cataloging and rating. used to be good for learning about music history, increasingly becoming worse as the userbase gets more and more autistic (oh, your rock song ends with guitar feedback? it's going in the experimental & noise charts now.). horrible for discussion.

great site in some ways, bad in some ways. if you're looking for music then rym and discogs are the best way to find what you're into or looking for and also provides a place to catalog your music and what you think of it (if you care about ratings). the userbase is notably the bad part and has been for years now, this due to the pretentiousness of the users and how it basically shares a userbase with album of the year, both infamous for just spamming memes or somewhat related shit and never really discussing the music itself. due to rym being somewhat niche and since as a "internet thing", it now just serves as a way to show how anthony fantano shifted music discussion into a non-existent state as his fans moved over to the site and took his opinions for "100% truth", living it forever doomed. if you just care for the music, then focus on genres and ignore ratings.

that new tyler the creator album has a song with some loud droning bass in one of the songs and they kept labelling it under "industrial hip hop"

unrelated, but the funniest one is system of a down being labelled "avant-garde metal". it's like, sweetie, they were all over the radio. they aren't "avant-garde" anything.

This is the most poisonous, useless bullshit music site. Don't start using it. It's solely for shallow cunts who pore over meaningless charts. I have never used it in my life and I'm just as knowledgeable about music, both new and old, as anyone I know who uses RYM, if not more. Stay pure. Stay far away from that shithole.

You should be asking that of /mu/. Rym is a great resource. Just don't get involved with its community.

But enough about /mu/...

Ignore top ratings charts and instead check out esoteric charts and users who have similar taste to you. I've also found a lot of my favorite albums after rage-inspecting people who rated my other favorites low and finding something good in their top rated albums.
