Decent NWOBHM with a really good singer. He was actually nearly in Sabbath - Martin and Iommi weren't talking by the end of the Forbidden tour, so Iommi was planning on going forward with Grimmett, Rondinelli and Murray if the original reunion lineup talks fell apart.

But to get back to being serious it's Executioner's song, and probably my favourite album by them.
Thankfully I saw them live once, not with Sheepdog because he quit in '89 but it was absolutely mindblowing, catchy riff after catchy riff, in this department thy shat on every single other band in the speed and thrash genre I've ever seen live. Yes, even Slayer. I still don't want to believe how they can come up with so many great AND catchy riffs.

NOPE. Punk's too sloppy, and it doesn't give me anything to latch onto besides it being energetic. Which to me, why the hell would I listen to a genre that's pretty much devoid of cool songwriting when speed metal is RIGHT there and has not just the high-energy, but actually has some depth to its songwriting. I do like crossover thrash, though! Usually the stuff on the thrashier end of the spectrum like Suicidal Tendencies - HWILTWICELT.

Listening to Time is the Healer right now. I see what you mean, this is some pretty cool shit. Hughes' vocal style, combined with the heavy as a lead zeppelin gives this song a VERY psychedelic quality. It's almost like Randy Holden - Population II but much more metallic; if you've ever listened to that record before.

The cryptic slaughter album I mentioned is one of the THE best thrash stuff you can find, then you can go on to the first Leeway album (after that they went into shitty thrash), first two Excel albums (third one is a groove/alt metal one but I also really like that one), first Crumbsuckers, literally everything Municipal waste released because they are THE crossover band and for a good reason, while you are at it Iron reagan, first two Uncle slam are also awesome. Maybe you'll like Cro-mags past the first album and you said you like Exodus and Slayer so also check out Gama bomb (starting with their second album, Citizen brain).

Disagree on BtR (I fucking LOVE that album, favorite thrash album bar none) but I'll easily concede on Kreator. I was mainly using them as an example as to why I don't think Reign in Blood is all that amazing, since I believe that both PtK and RiB share the same exact flaw: they just get repetitive. I don't know what definition of "Traditional Heavy Metal" you're using, but when I hear that phrase, I think of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc. I don't think of an aggressive version of thrash metal like Razor, which is in the general extreme metal category. That's like saying Slayer is traditional heavy metal.

As long as they're related to trad metal in SOME capacity and aren't one of the forbidden genres, or overtly influenced/congruent with death or black metal (i.e., Celtic Frost, Sepultura, Sodom) it's allowed
(Stuff like Slayer is dicey though, and is on the cusp of what is/isn't accepted so keep that in mind.)

Came out 1986. It's 'Pigfeeder!' from Deep Switch's only album.
It's pretty standard heavy metal riffs for the most part. but there's an almost-rap interlude towards the end of the song.

To add onto this with an actual example, with thrash specifically the lines can get incredibly gray; so what I usually go by is "If it's even slightly heavier than Slayer - Angel of Death, it's no longer related to traditional metal and has gone fully into extreme metal territory." While not 100% precise (that's impossible), this is the best method in my experience.

One reason I'm wondering is because guys like Venom (who are credited with inspiring Black Metal to some extent) released their first album in 1981.
I'm not sure If I posted this one in the classic metal threads before, but a more obscure example of an album crediting with influencing extreme metal would be the Nightmare Theatre album by Exorcist. They were actually a side project of Virgin Steele, a US power metal band.
I dunno if the riffs are heavier than Angel of Death, but vocals are extreme:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj_LfJ-oB00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c0sglMXnA4

Virgin Steele's usual stuff would probably fit in the thread, but IDK if their side project would.
Actually that brings me to another question: Slayer was always an aggressive thrash band, but What about situations like Judas Priest? Their earlier stuff is basically stuff that helped define traditional heavy metal, but later on you have much more aggressive albums like the famous Painkiller (and their 2 albums without Halford).

Venom isn't black metal. They inspired it, but they aren't black metal proper. I consider the first BM bands to be Bathory & Sodom.

Is this a joke or are you just throwing hypotheticals my way for the lulz? Judas Priest was NEVER as heavy as Slayer and all of their material is allowed. :P

Anyways, speaking of Judas Priest have some of their songs that are definitely on topic:

The Hellion/ Electric Eye. A well known classic. It annoys me that theirs versions of the song on youtube without the intro:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=B4VrD4d7Kqk

Rock Hard Ride Free. This is probably one of those songs with a double entrende title:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=pGFBpXotZuA

Here's a few that are probably a little less famous:
I think Rocka Rolla is their only song with a Harmonica:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=ihgHbMagWSw

Point of Entry definitely had some good songs, like the Desert Plains track:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=hxNN-VUbXfw

I once saw a review describe Killing Machine as a metal equivalent to disco (probably because of the four on the floor drumbeat):

That's just stupid. I'd sooner call Diamonds and Rust disco metal, because that one actually has some traits of the genre.

Aside from Rocka Rolla, I only know a few metal songs with Harmonica. There's obviously The Wizard:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=e8fxrX-YidM

Strangely, there's also some cover versions of the song Train Train that would count as metal in my eyes:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=NnN_Oz1U0RE (Blackfoot)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=QMY3ieqNrs8 (Warrant)
The thing is that neither of these bands were really traditional metal bands, and the original song β€” which was written by a grandfather of Blackfoot's guitarist β€” was not metal at all.
For comparison, this is what the original song sounded like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sROSe31vV2s And here's a non-metal cover by Dolly Parton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdN11Ou9xh4

Until roughly 1975-1976, yes. After Sad Wings of Destiny, metal starts to sound less and less like rock music. And by Iron Maiden's debut album, I'd consider the genres more or less their own distinct entities. Been discussed to death, though.
>Songs like Whole Lotta Love or Communication Breakdown would sound more metal if the guitars weren't as thin:
WLL, maybe. But Communication Breakdown's only metal attribute is the palm-muted main riff, everything else in the song is very clearly blues rock.

Final album for the night, I'm just about done with it... and I don't know, this one just isn't clicking like their debut did. It starts off solid with the first two songs, and the last is pretty good as well; but outside of those three songs most of the material here is just standard mid-tempo anthemic heavy metal that isn't memorable in the slightest. There's also a lot of ballad-y, softer moments on this album. And that in conjunction with the more catchy song structures has me wondering if AS were fishing for potential radio/MTV airplay with one.
