So no, it didn't get out of hand. They were "observers" of the outlaw, but not the outlaw himself. The outlaw is a mysterious immortal figure, here one minute, gone the next, jumping in everyone's songs.

The term was originally meant to be a cheeky comment on their careers outside the Nashville hit factory, not a literal description of their lifestyle or values. In that sense it did get out of hand.
