What went wrong? It's almost like they're different musicians compared to the ground breaking music they made in their early years. You can't even just say it's age because Megadeth made some of their best stuff in their later years.

Fans always want bands to go back to the early years man and they did but they just make the most basic and stock version of their genre when being forward thinking and progressive is what made them the leaders of it.

Cliff. He wasn't just a bass player. He was the theoryfag of the group. Sometimes he even wrote the parts for the other guys, like Orion. That was all an elaborate bass solo like Anesthesia at first, but they wanted to put the group in more..so he transcribed all of their parts for them.

In every band there's always a maximum of one guy who actually knows anything about music and the rest are just fiddling.

in the case of Aerosmith that was Brad Whitford

In Metallica's case it was Dave Mustaine and they lived off his taped guitar licks for years and finally sucked once they ran out of them.

they’re different people. imagine performing songs you wrote when you were 20 in your 60s.

They peaked with the black album and decided to do more of that, but they were pretty much spent of good ideas other than a few good singles off load/reload. They finally came to their senses and made a good album again with Hardwired, but they were 2 decades too late.

TBA was the last album where they still had some Mustaine riff tapes left.

Nothing. They were right about everything and WE were the retards. Death Magnetic is one of their most creative albums period. St. Anger is just some crappy production issues but the best thrash bangers of the 21st century. Hardwired's first three singles, were some of the best songs the band has written since the 1980s. 72 Seasons is Lars and Letfield reborn after their intensive physical training to powerhouses even if its really boring at times you can't deny they are in a massive groove live and this could be in their best condition as a band.

Its how they produce new music now. Write mundane shit on the fly in the studio. Hit record. Done. Plus that Greg Fidelman guy ruins everything he touches. And in the end it also comes down to that they aren't as hungry and motivated as they were when they started out. Millionaires do not make good music. Period.

Cliff's influence and contributions to the band are extremely exaggerated. Everyone loves to say if he was still around the band would still be amazing but that's just bullshit
It's always been James and Lars in charge

Kiko was the best gutiarist Megadeth had since Friedman and even he couldn't stand being around Dave any longer and quit

Yeah but Cliff brought some extra spice with the grand instrumentals, some fuzzy bass experimentation and Lovecraftian lore.

Once J and Lars were left as the sole group's creative direction, they pushed the band in a very dry direction (AJFA, black album, etc).

He's not a good drummer.

He really isn't.

And their success?

You know what? A lot of is based off of me.

>He's not a good drummer.
He's really not. He was kinda creative with his syncopation in the 80s, but even back then he was not a tight drummer as he was speeding up and slowing down all over those early albums and in later years he's become lazy and never practices.

James being too proud of his "legacy" and wanting to stick with the Metallica name instead of going solo and just making music he's passionate about and uncompromised. his stupid need to "keep the family together" (even though he divorced his wife).

St. Anger is ironically the last time he had anything resembling a good idea when it comes to drumming or arranging. and post recovery James is too soft to put him in his place anymore so now we get Metallica by committee and it fucking sucks

>What went wrong?
Young alcoholics who found success raging against their shitty fathers became rich and fathers themselves - so the rage that fueled their early thrash and was the foundation of their success vanished.
