They were the first to do dissonance and "evil" scales. There's a clear cut before-and-after Slayer. Extreme metal owes everything to them.

They were apparently blasting (c)rap backstage at the end of the 80s all the time.

Dissonant music stinks and extreme metal fucking sucks.

everything they did venom also did, slayer just did it faster. i think you need to learn more about the history of metal

Slayer committed to the sound and pushed it to its essential form. It's like I said above, they were the first to reject the blues entirely. You could never have caught them dead writing something like Teacher's Pet.
Anonymous No.127496129
Blue Cheer came before Sabbath but they were also more or less forgotten for being a shitty novelty band. Venom inspired the satanic image but I don't know that Mantas influenced anybody to play like him.

Anthrax are absolutely in same level as Metallica ; Slayer and Megadeth have better peaks (Hell Awaits, Rust in Peace), but Persistence of Time is as good as anything Metallica ever did.

No shit. Joey Belladonna is (was) technically an objectively better singer than anyone in thrash metal. But you can of course subjectively prefer other singers. For me personally of the big four it's Dave Mustaine > Joey Belladonna > James Hetfield >>>>>>>>> Tom Araya.

I don't think Hetfield really matured into his own vocally until Master of Puppets because he sounds extremely strained on some notes on Kill 'em All and Ride the Lightning.

You are wrong.
For one thing, Slayer has THE most consistent discography of the Big 5 & the most solid run of classic LPs.
Secondly, one should also rank each band according to their first album, the one that established them.
In which case, the order is without argument:
>Slayer "Show No Mercy"
>Anthrax "Fistful Of Metal"
>Exodus (Not even of the Big 5) "Bonded By Blood"
>Metallica "Kill 'em All"
And lastly
>Megadeth "Killing Is My Business"
Slayer is only considered trash to lightweights & thrash metal tourists.

If it's consistently shit it's not good.
>& the most solid run of classic LPs
Classic LPs? Are you fucking insane? Nobody bought Slayer albums until the mid 90s. They were a cult band, at best, until 1990. Only the most retarded sickos who enjoyed music without melodies and "scary lyrics" listened to Slayer in the 80s.

Sorry fella.
Your picrel is a literal pisstake & only Megadeth equaled Slayer when it comes down to who had the most solid run of quality albums, not to mention sheer consistency.
To put it another way, no one was surprised when "Enter Sandman" became a huge hit courtesy of MTV.
Anthrax attracting a non-thrash audience to their music with "I'm The Man" & "Got The Time" was down to novelty at best.
Megadeth getting airplay in front of a main stream audience was down to progression & hard work, i.e. deserved & therefore not exactly surprising either.
But Slayer's "Season In The Abyss" getting heavy rotation on MTV outside of Headbangers Ball caught literally everyone off guard.
And they did so without softening their sound or "selling-out".
Again, Slayer isn't for pussies & lightweights.
Nor did they ever need to write "ballads" (that means you Metallica & Testament) in order to move units/sell physical albums.
Give 'em their due or fuck off.

If that's where you draw the line then all four suck equally hard because Christgau said so.

I took a normie homie to a theater showing of the Big 4 concert 15 years ago, he only really knew their bigger songs (mostly Metallica) and whatever songs made it into vidya like Guitar Hero or Brutal Legend. At the end he basically agreed with everything I already knew
>Anthrax puts on a hell of a show and is the tightest unit musically
>Megadeth's technicality is impressive, Dave is kind of goofy but doesn't waste time
>Metallica deserve their spot at the top of the metal pantheon, if not for their influence but for the way they can entertain an audience
And Slayer might as well have been replaced by a retard in a football helmet stuck inside a dumpster. Also it was kind of sus that Slayer didn't join in during the final jam aside from Dave Lombardo. It's almost as if the band themselves know they're nowhere near as good as their peers.

Among the Living is one of the best thrash albums if you want something that gets you instinctually headbanging. Few can make me do that. Sadly, the rest of their output isn't great.

I think I'd pick Testament over Anthrax overall.
Anonymous No.127501104

Slayer's output is really boring, like they have a thin sound and when they go speed mode it sounds like pulp. every song has the same riff style, like i feel anywhere I go in Reign in Blood, it sounds like variations on each other.

Much prefer stuff like Kreator and Sodom. Speaking of which, where does german thrash fit into all this?
