Now that the dust has well and truly settled
What did Death Grips' work end up amounting to? And what did they mean to you personally? Genuine answers only.

The gist of it is that Zach's a genius and nobody gives a shit about what Ride has been saying for the past 15 years

They gave us one truly great album with Niggas On The Moon, the rest is kind of disposable honestly

The real question is why haven't they released a proper live album yet when it captures a different facet of their sound

Loved your work on that Be Brave Bold Robot album.

Honestly the most captivating artist of the 2010's by a large margin.

they had a good run. getting to work with bjork, les claypool, that guy who worked on shrek. i understand why they quit while they were ahead instead of eventually growing stale.

My biggest influence and what set me down the path I'm currently on in terms of making art and living my life in general.

Personally, I think they embodied the spirit of wanting to break the mainstream and releasing that energy we all know exists when it comes to making art, music, stories etc. I think the problem with them isn’t even necessarily them or their art, it’s the way social media seemingly highjacked their legacy and turned them into a meme. They were too powerful, and their influences and influence are extremely important for any of you who are truly passionate about making anything. Don’t let these retards repetitive memes, statements and complaints dilute your understanding of death grips. It’s in the name too, death eventually does grips all, it is the truth…

Could also be a cali luciferian psy-op death ritual too, y’never know.

Hard to say.

Raw, genuine expression with unrestrained creativity and passion that resonates with me, even the record with no vocals Jenny Death. DG is an outstanding band in a league of their own and watching MC Ride and Zach Hill perform is, I don't know, compelling, hypnotic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MHhLDCJ57E You see that kind of energy in extreme metal, which is probably why I like them.

Perhaps it's the aggression that everyone has inside them, everyone knows it and "speaks that language", that is to say bands like DG make music that "speaks the language of aggression" very well and depending on the person, it either resonates with them or it doesn't. It's not just anger of course, the music is fun, wild and groovy also.
It's probably as uncomplicated as that. Just combine aggression, high energy, unleashed creativity and you end up with DG.

>meaning
I don't know what it means, the lyrics are too sphinxlike, I haven't studied them but they speak of trauma IIRC; and to say that their music is cathartic only, that it "just makes you feel better" is to reduce it. By listening to their music and watching them perform, I can tell that Death Grips means a lot to Death Grips, that's one reason I've never shat on them like their entire fanbase apparently. You see someone pouring their soul out and your first instict is to make shitty jokes for youtube thumbs up. If that's all they're gonna get then by all means retire, your "fans" don't deserve you.

Great band that pushed the limits with their innovative music and style. They also hade enough sense to realize when the magic had gone. Overall, their work will be remembered as great. At least by me.

NO LOVE DEEP WEB is still such a relentlessly entertaining, hilarious, quoteable, spartan, rhythmically interesting, prophetic, BASS HEAVY album… “she shoot PUSSY thru your chest you DIE”… peak peak peak

Among the endless examples of bands that would have been good without vocals, but instead ruined all their music.

For me personally they were magical when I first found them. The first artist I came across that felt mysterious and cool that was modern before the late 2010s collapsed that for me. Haven't been able to get that in modern music since.
