The reality is that the band that actually defined this generation was The Red Hot Chili Peppers, but nobody wants to admit that (understandably) so they desparately search for any other alternative. A close second was Beastie Boys who does this era no favors.
All this soft rock shit was completely inorganic. RHCP weren't. They were just an abomination.
