Not really. Spacey, dreamy Deftones good. Alt metal Deftones meh. It more or less pans out. KNY is basically a sobered up SNW and Ohms is like watching post-Gore Deftones halfway try to LARP as their AtF selves. Weirdest part is maybe putting Adrenaline over White Pony and honestly, album's just fun. Naive, but fun.

I never understood the appeal of the Deftones. It sounds like they write regular songs, then the songs all develop some kind of disease before they're released. They sound sickly.
Anonymous No.127540184
>>127540030
I don't think they write regular songs. Their setup is fundamentally weird - you have a new-wave obsessed frontman shrieking over a rhythm guitarist on lead with a turntablist on keyboards, a drummer playing to metal riffs like he's never heard of double bass pedals, and a bassist that does whatever the fuck they feel like doing. Not really anything normal going on here.

I don't get the Ohms love, at least in a critical darling sense. I felt it was kind of a cowardly retreat into safe territory, though to be fair I did love much of what made Gore different. Ohms felt like it was trying to throw a lot of that away. I actually listened to it again yesterday and the only songs I love are The Spell of Mathematics and This Link Is Dead. The rest just kind of exists.

Eh, there are songs on the album that I simply like more. As far as throwback sounds go I prefer ecdysis, as far as anxious undertones go I prefer cXz, and as far as aggressive swagger goes I prefer cut hands. milk of the madonna's got good qualities but it's not really standing out to me in any one category.

It’s so funny how this board has turned on deftones in the past few years due to their resurgence in popularity. I distinctly remember how highly this band was regarded when KNY dropped .
Anonymous No.127550282

I didn't jump on board until after Ohms came out but I do remember there being threads about KNY and a general sense of disappointment surrounding Gore. That shit was pretty hard to miss on the catalog, and when I got to listening on my own I still remembered the album artwork from back then, like "oh, it's THIS band".
Anonymous No.127550341 >>127550522
Kny Is so mid, some great songs like poltergeist and leathers but the rest puts me to sleep. Good choruses like goon squad are totally wasted

I think the tight transitions impact its listenability greatly, it's such a smooth listen if you aren't cherry picking at it. Private Music mostly does the same and benefits similarly.

How many albums have Deftones been making the same boring product now do you think? For me, it's Gore.

Diamond Eyes had some melodies. Then the majority of the meat was somewhat homogeneous. KNY - several great melodies, maybe even a pop tune here and there. Gore, Ohms and this? How is it not the same passion, power level, vocal style, even the countermelodies in the lack-of-melodies have the same vocabulary.

Mind you I'm not saying they're bad, I'm saying it's been the same vibe for the past 10 years.

I don't get associating Deftones with melodies. I feel like they've barely tried with those after Adrenaline, and hardly at all from self-titled onwards. I see them as more of a texture/groove oriented band, and those aspects of the band have definitely been pushed over time. If the lack of nuanced melodies bothered me, I would hardly listen to them at all. Even Around the Fur barely has any of note outside of the singles.

>I don't get associating Deftones with melodies. I feel like they've barely tried with those after Adrenaline, and hardly at all from self-titled onwards.
what are you even talking about? SNW through KNY are their most melodic albums by far.
Anonymous No.127552785

You know, they do try a little harder with melodies in that era, sure. Had to think about it but Beware, Cherry Waves, Sextape, 976-EVIL, Entombed, Rosemary. Fair enough. But even those albums still have stuff like Rapture, Mein, Rocket Skates, CMND/CTRL, Swerve City and Goon Squad that stick closer to their typical focus on grooves. But yeah, thinking about it a bit there is more melody in those, especially Saturday Night Wrist. Still, when I put on Adrenaline it's a parade of post-hardcore riffs and in a good way.
