You stupid zoom-zoom do understand that Ellis didnt actually like Phil Collins? That's a joke to show how terribly bad taste Bateman has

Yeah bc it’s typical 90s ‘ohhh rich people so dumb me so smart’ bs.
Someone as stupid as that obviosuly would hate high skill music like Genesis and prefer some indie shit or hip hop to be different.

Pretty sure the implication is that Bateman is a shallow retard for prefering late era Genesis over the Gabriel years. Like he is for claiming that Huey Lewis is "far more cynical than Elvis Costello"

The joke was that he only listens to what's popular so that he fits in with the rest of the yuppies, and that he recites album reviews he read in a magazine or something in order to seem cultured.

He doesn't have taste, he listens to what he's told to listen to and regurgitates other people's words in order to sound smart

That's the in-universe reason, the writer/director was also being tongue in cheek about Collins

With 40 years of hindsight, it's amazing how hated yuppies were. Reagan sucked but I'd rather have some money in my pocket than be a David Foster Wallace type of sad post-hippie.

I feel like a lot of people miss the joke that he’s just regurgitating stuff he read pretending it’s his own opinion and instead think having the opinion that huey lewis and the news is good is bad

pretty sure critics weren‘t bloviating like this about Phil Collins or Huey Lewis (Ellis is a Costello fan btw, literally the most critically overrated artist), the point of these chapters is to show how emotionally stunted Bateman is in the way he intellectualizes music rather than connecting with it on a deeper level, I‘m sure /classical/ is full of this

He’s supposed to sound like he’s just reciting a positive review of the album as his own opinion, because he’s basically an alien

Exactly. Bateman putting Costello down in favor of Huey Lewis is Ellis saying "this is the opposite of my own opinions"

Costello is a poser and lacks all sincerity, visually and sonically. Road on punk's press, but wasn't a punk. Also, wrongfully gets the cred as the "jazzmaster" guy too, when it was Verlaine.
Phil Collins was literally bald. And a drummer. He couldn't pose if his life depended on it. It'd never work. He just decided to own it.

pretty sure age-normalized costello and collins are equally bald

Phil had to battle it in his prime, at the height of fame, with all eyes and cameras focused on him. He's probably autoleveled to Zen master for dealing with that.

>The joke was that he only listens to what's popular
so does 95% of the population of the world that listens to music. cds hadnt taken off yet and there really werent that many titles even available on the format in the us at that time. the first album on cd to even sell 1 million copies was brothers in arms in 85. bateman was a young guy and the music he had was what every normal white 20 something year old guy would be listening to
Anonymous No.127549383
Ellis is a queer (an oddly conservative one, but still). Of course we side with Bateman. Phil is heterosexual sexhaver music.
