an interesting review about sign of the hammer
https://www.loudersound.com/features/flash-metal-suicide-manowar-sign-of-the-hammer

Excerpt:
>But not as nuts as the album’s openers, All Men Play On Ten and Animals. First of all, O gods of metal, I mean no disrespect when I say this, but All Men Play On Ten is kind of a rap song. It is. It’s not like there wasn’t a precedent for NYC rockers to try their hand at rapping in the 80s – see Wendy O Williams, Dee Dee Ramone and Debby Harry for prime examples – so it’s not out of nowhere, but still, writing a song about how they’ll never change their sound and then changing their sound in that very song is some serious next-level shit.

>And Animals is straight-up horny teenager glam metal. No way around it. It’s a fantastic wad of mid 80s bubblegum for sure, but β€œtrue metal” ? That might be a stretch, even for the Kings of Metal.

When I first saw the article, I didn't get it. But when I compared the vocal delivery to hiphop from around that era, it made more sense.

Also how the verses are kinda minimalist. Most of it is just a drum beat to accompany the vocals, which are often kinda spoken. The other instruments just join in to mark the end of a line.

Completely buttfucks their debut in every possible way! Songwriting's better, riffs are heavier and more varied, production's seen a MASSIVE boost in quality, the guitar tone's got some nice crunch to it (reminiscent of George Lynch's tone on Under Lock and Key and Back for the Attack), and Eizo Sakamoto's singing is less amateurish.

I like rap, but don't listen to that much of it. And I don't really go seeking out old hip-hop most of the time.
>Yeah I can somewhat see it now. Still think it's a pretty strange comparison, though.
I wouldn't have thought of myself without that article.

While it's usually not delivered in this exact way, the singer (Eric Adams) does a similar halfway between singing and speaking on some other songs.* So I have no idea if this was coincidental or an intentional experiment from Manowar. But they may have done stranger things, so who knows.

If anyone is wondering, I think this is one of the tracks that made me get what the writer of the article was saying:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=4BbQIx3F1jA
"I Can't Live Without My Radio" by LL Cool J is a very minimalist song, mostly rapping over a drum beat. With something that sounds like brasswind sample in between some verses. The vocal delivery is also pretty different stylistically than newer hiphop.
I could also compare the lyrical subject of the song to some hiphop songs. A lot of them talk about how great performers they are. That one even talks about playing music loudly. Although, I think "we are great performers" is a pretty common topic for a song in all sorts of musical genres.

*Off the top of my head, The Power of Thy Sword has him sounding like he's reading poetry for a lot of the verses.

An interesting thing that I read somewhere is that the role of Murray (their mascot) in the cover of the albums are also supposed to be up for interpretation. Like, is the mascot protecting someone or haunting them?

Anyways, there's interesting stuff on the album. But I'm not sure which were standouts for me. In general, I didn't really like Dio's solo songs as much as some of his work with Sabbath or rainbow.
I don't remember that much off the top of my head, but All the Fools sailed Away has this interesting sort of synthesizer solo and a choir on some of the chorus.

I'm not sure if manowar plays thunderpick as the intro to guyana live, but I think there's no pause between the 2 songs on the album,

On their next album they also have the intros to 2 songs as separate tracks. Drums of Doom is basically the intro to Holy War. Master of Revenge is the intro to Black Wind, Fire, and steel; you can hear it's theme used again at the end of that song.

"But the idea was to reverse the question of 'How come you've got a monster drowning a priest?' We wanted to be able to say, 'How do you know it's not a priest drowning a monster?' And I think that's kind of been proven out in the last few years with all the problems we've had in the Catholic Church. In hindsight, I like to think we were right about who we put in the water."

>I liked most of the songs. Including the stuff that was originally on singles, like "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)", "Show No Mercy", and their cover of "Paint It Black".

>The 2 songs that weren't really as good for me on their self titled were "School Daze" and "The Flame". I didn't hate them, they weren't as good. Maybe I'll like them more if I got used to them? Idk.

>School daze has cool riff. Except it only gets used in the intro. The rest of the song is like a chord progression I guess.

>Not sure why I didn't find the Flame that interesting. Interestingly, i think it's the most rock-n-roll vibe song on the album.

Interestingly school daze has a kinda sad vibe to it. Maybe because of the (power) chord progression used.

>Interestingly school daze has a kinda sad vibe to it.
I wouldn't say sad, in fact what it reminds me of is US power metal. The chord progression on that song reminds me a lot of stuff off Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction and a few other albums from around the same time. (But to be fair, a lot of WASP's debut album's guitarwork remind me of USPM. It's strangely aggressive for a pure metal album.)
Anonymous No.127609385 >>127609442
Some further thoughts:
School daze is not the only song like that. (To me at least) Despite sometimes being considered a hair/glam metal band, there's not really many happy or upbeat songs on the album (lyrically).

I wanna be somebody is probably the most upbeat/positive song on there.
Animal is raunchy. But the other song about sex on the album, L.O.V.E. Machine, is a bit sadder. Mentioning broken hearts and such.

Animal, I Wanna Be Somebody (that's too heavy of a riff to be considered pure trad metal, there's some USPM here), On Your Knees, the galloping riff at 0:25 in The Torture Never Stops, but the main one is Hellion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARygIsf92LM
Obviously Blackie's singing isn't in a USPM style; but for me there are definite parallels with the guitarwork on their debut and early USPM. And Hellion to my ears just sounds like a USPM song without theatrical, epic vocals. Like this song would not at all be out of place on Savatage's debut.

Out of left field in what sense? Aside from that, the first 2 albums probably aren't as good as the ones after that (especially the 90s albums). But they definitely have some great tracks like Children of the Storm and Redeeer (among others)

I'm not sure if you mean the mixing, or the song structure/riffs. There'd be a difference in both. There's probably multiple reasons for the change between albums.
The mixing on the first 2 albums was originally kinda bad. But they recently made a new version with a different (and probably much better) mix, which is on their official youtube page. You can still find unofficial uploads of the older mix. That might be part of it.

In terms of riff style and structure, it might be because they got a new guitarist on their 3rd album, Noble Savage. The previous guitarist Jack Starr was involved in writing a lot of their tracks before that (usually along side David DeFeis).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Steele_(album)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardians_of_the_Flame_(album)

The previous guitarist, Jack Starr's playing/soloing style was also a bit different. Off the top of my head, on some songs like 'The Redeemer' I think sometimes did these little guitar fills.

>Subject matter
They definitely had sexual & romance themes before. Are you just talking about how dated it is?
This also could be affected by the change in writers.

This. Probably should've specified. :P
>They definitely had sexual & romance themes before. Are you just talking about how dated it is?
Not exactly? It's more so in conjunction with the songwriting style. Sure there was some material off the first LP I remember being about sex & girls, but none of the songs there really sounded like full-on cock rock y'know? Seventeen (VS) is a pretty glammy song, and the chorus just doesn't sound like anything I remember off of the first LP.
>This also could be affected by the change in writers.
This sounds the most likely to me. Also when you mention Jack Starr, is he the same Jack Starr that was in the band Jack Starr's Burning Starr?

to be clear i don't know how much jack starr was involved in writing lyrics. Some songs he definitely wrote lyrics on, like "Go Down Fighting", because he's the only person with writing credits for that song.

For comparison. Here's some other tracks on there. Some of the standout tracks are outright love songs.
On Wings of the Night:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=I8voDxXfip4
Chains of Fire:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=fryLYTvxpLg
Even the best song on the album 'Burning of Rome (Cry for Pompeii)' has some romantic themes in it, but it's absolutely a power metal song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qzWCtRknPc [Embed]

It's not outright cock rock, but I've heard some people call those first 2 glam metal or hard rock. I personally don't really see it, at least in terms of riffs.

That album definitely had it's share of ballads and and softer songs, but I don't think these are really cock rock. Maybe glam, but I'm not familiar with that genre really.

The album afterwards, life among the ruins, did go a little in the cockrock direction (but not that far). It had some songs like this:
>Sex Religion Machine
https://youtube.com/watch?v=mgqfGWz4UzE
>Too Hot To Handle
https://youtube.com/watch?v=RbBPs1SQoyc

This one's is a cover of a famous blues song, Hoochie Coochie Man:

I can see the argument for this one but again, not glam.

>That album definitely had it's share of ballads and and softer songs, but I don't think these are really cock rock. Maybe glam, but I'm not familiar with that genre really.
Alright so glam is kind of a nebulous genre, but every single glam song has one of these two aspects: catchy riffing based on hard rock, and a particular reliance on hooks. There's other aspects too ('80s overproduction, party lyrics, basic; digestible for the masses songwriting, etc.) but these are the main two that make whenever something's glam or not a dead giveaway. And I've also listened to a LOT of glam in the past, and I can say without question that those two songs are in no way glam metal. They just don't have any of the characteristics of the genre.
>Sex Religion Machine
About as glam as Skid Row-circa Slave to the Grind. Aka not much, more dirty; hard 'n' heavy than catchy and friendly.
>Too Hot To Handle
Glam. One listen to the main riff and chorus told me all I needed to know.
>Strangely, I've seen people call this song from a later album something like hard rock. Which doesn't make sense to me at all.

If you are looking up tracks on youtube, you might want to use https://music.youtube.com . it might have slightly better audio quality than regular youtube (or maybe just a little louder).
Also for some reason, it's sometimes hard to find the official tracks when searching in the normal youtube. I think youtube's search has gone to shit.

The anniversary remix editions of some of those tracks might have different instrument tracks. Those are the ones on the official virgin steele channel on youtube. Like on the redeemer, the orchestra keys that play during the guitar solo are much different in the new remix (I prefer the old sound of the keys slightly).

On the first album apparently a few of the master tapes were a little damaged, and they had to make creative changes for the remix. I'm not sure if that was the case on the second album.

Those newer remixes are also on bandcamp:

I was gonna ask people thought's on body count (since early on some of the riffs were fairly trad metal bits). But, i had decided to check the pastebin and I saw rap metal on the non-trad list. Not all of their songs have outright rap, some are just him talking like tom araya (but its borderline).

newsflash: your heroes are just bald old men in piss rags selling greatest hits CDs at Walmart
if you still blast this baldcuckery you deserve to be locked in a retirement home with them

Ozzy Osbourne Oozy Diaperborne, drooling through a mushy Pampers, barely capable of grunting words

King Diamond Cuck Diapermound, falsetto tantrums straight out of the nursery

Judas Priest Judas Pee-Stain, leather-clad geriatrics leaking into adult diapers mid-solo

Iron Maiden Iron Mayonnaise, dad-rock diaper parade, Eddie just a mascot for bowel incontinence

Metallica Metalli-poopia, billionaires filling Huggies while whining about Napster like spoiled toddlers

Slayer Spray-Her, Depends-shredding geriatrics pretending they’re still edgy teens

Megadeth MegaWet, Mustaine crying in his piss diaper while hallucinating about Metallica stealing his bottle

MotΓΆrhead Moist-head, same bar diaper anthem on repeat for 40 years, Lemmy leaking from every orifice

Black Sabbath Black Shat-bath, the sound of geriatrics groaning on the toilet

Dio Pee-o, elf-sized diaper gremlin squeaking about rainbows while soaking his onesie

stop kneeling to diaper rock relics
stop pretending boomer piss anthems are β€œessential”

No, that's exactly it. He had AIDS but still slept around knowing full well he did, which led to the families of some of his victims going after Atlantic and the publishing companies - it's why the two Badlands albums (the third one is just a compilation of demos that's been OoP for decades anyway) have never been formally in print since the early '90s. Rock Candy Records in the UK reissued them but then they got pulled only within a couple of months. Also the singer from Hellion says that he tried to rape her once in the early '90s.

Gillen obviously knew he was into some legitimately really bad shit too since Greg Chaisson said he had a Christian conversion in his last few days alive.

>>127647056
Yeah, Badlands were great. While they're ostensibly a hair metal band, they're like Tesla in that they were trying to do that retro '70s kind of thing. So I'd sooner recommend them to fans of Zeppelin, Purple and Bad Company than I would fans of Motley Crue or Poison.

I was saying in another thread, I like hearing other people's AI generations and the styles they're into, especially if they're similar to mine. This is one of my faves. Kinda like Mercyful Fate and I made the 3 dogs of doom disappear at the end of it lol:

The anti-dog culture subject matter is something personal to me. There's too many out of control beasts that can literally delete people. I got sick of it, so started generating AI songs about the horrors of them. Nobody should live in fear of an attack from one of these beasts.

This intrigues me greately. What happened to you that you grew to hate dogs? I was crippled by a dog, have ot sit in a wheelchair. I wish all dogs would be destroyed. One dog even destroyed my favorite Judas Priest shirt from their 84 tour. I hate them more than Hitler. You are brave for calling them out so cleverly.
