I blame our parents who made us fall for the college meme. I bought an electric guitar when I was 16 but I never learned to play it because I was too busy studying. If I had known back then I would become an incel shut-in NEET despite my obtaining a degree I would have flunked school and devoted my time to learning guitar.
Most great musicians weren't college-educated anyway, The Beatles certainly weren't and they were already world stars at 20.

this is true but i wouldn't really blame music teachers. i think its more that easier forms of music seemed appealing. nobody wanted to learn guitar for 5+ years when you can pirate some software and make hip hop or electronic slop instantly.

also social media/the internet totally destroyed everyones mind. you can have endless entertainment laying in bed now. theres no motivation to get up off your ass and actually DO something.

This is just not true, but the musically talented zoomers aren't going to be pushed. Older and semifamous zoomers like Momma are great guitarists, though they've trended towards simple pop rock on their most recent album. Hello Mary is a power trio with a viola and standup bass player who switched to guitar and electric bass, they are excellent musicians. Lowertown is a zoomer duo where the guy is an excellent fingerstyle guitarist, warms up with Bach on piano, plays sax etc. The girl is a decent guitarist, plays flute, bass, etc. Lowertown and Hello Mary formed in jazzbands, so clearly some music teachers still do their jobs.

A what now? The closest I understand as "counterculture" was back when "Jysk Harshnoise Mafia" was active, and even THAT was a fucking scam. Counterculture, or whatever the fuck you want to portray a pig with make-up, never happens due to the stark self realization of it being "consumer grade" in any direction it wanders. No matter how much one sit in a stupid room with pitch shifters, keyboards you circuit bend yourself and a megaphone yelling you want drugs, which was what "Jysk Harshnoise Mafia" seemed to enjoy doing... It all just turn into what it should never be... Consumer grade-available. They did give a good try back then, making what was an actual breaking down the foundations and actually exploring the more interesting parts that never came "post industrial"-era of music... But as one of my friends said at a show with harshnoise we saw; "Now we just need that fucking hippie on that Afghan-carpet make it fly, then we are set!". Their "anti musicality and culture"-standpoint and -statement was undeniable for a while though. It just lost it's own style sadly
